Open Water Dishes VS. Water Bottles

Postby Tarsun » Wed Aug 18, 2010 3:47 pm

The other day, it came to be, me and another bird owner had a debate on our ways of providing water for our birds. He suggested that birds should get water through water bottles because birds can get fussy with water and spill water all over their cage. I thought it was stupid. I mean duh...birds are suppose to be messy. Anyways I happened to disagree on the fact that birds should drink water from a water bottle. Water bottles are for rodents like rabbits, hamsters, chinchillas etc. Not for birds, that's just my opinion. I strongly think birds should get water from open water dishes. It's more natural. In the wild, birds don't drink from water bottles. From open water dishes, they can drink water and if they want they can just hop inside the water dish and bathe. And plus, bottle cleaning is just too much work, and if the water bottle isn't cleaned properly it can harm your bird. Open water dishes are easier to clean

So anyone agree or disagree with me? And what are some of your opnions on this topic?

And rodents drinking out of water bottles is natural? You drinking out of a water bottle is natural? Keeping a parrot as a pet is natural? These natural arguments really don't float when it comes to doing all together unnatural things.

Kili drinks and baths out of her bottle and the water stays clean for up to several days. I change the water once a day whereas a dish needs to be changed regularly. I can leave her for several days and know she is getting a clean source of water. There are neither dishes nor bottles in the wild so when it comes to choosing, it's a matter of seeing which is more hygienic and safer.
