Poor air quality

Postby JadeW » Sat Aug 21, 2010 1:43 am

Not sure how many people know, but the fires in BC this summer are raging pretty fiercely and creating rather a lot of smoke. Because of the strong winds, even though I live pretty far away from the fires, we've seen rather a lot of smoke settling this way and drastically affecting the air quality...

Inside the houses still seem to have good breathable air, but it had me wanting (extra badly) to run out and buy an air purifier. Cas is doing well by staying inside and well away from any open doors and windows, but it leaves me wondering how other people deal with sudden changes in air quality like this.

What would you do?

It's terrible, isn't it? I woke up yesterday thinking it was foggy, but it was just the smoke. I'm in Alberta and it's been pretty bad here. Sputnik seems to be doing fine so far, but I know my eyes and nose have been bothered, so it's got to be affecting him too. I don't know - I thought of getting my humidifier out (I know that doesn't clean the air but it will add some much-needed moisture) but I think you are right - I'll go today to price-check purifiers in town.

I am in Vancouver and it is not too bad this week but the sun looked orange and very hazy last week. We had a traincar with sulfur on fire last week and had to get the residents to close all doors and windows....brutal

Didnt Russia just have the same thing?

I would have thought an air purifier would be an advisable addition

Definitely can't wait for all the smoke to be cleared... I'm starting to feel like I've got allergies : ( I know this can't be good for Cas, but I also still see all kinds of wildlife outside that seems to be doing okay. Hawks and Magpies still doing what they're supposed to be doing.

Cannot wait for this to be cleared up. :?

We had issues last year from the big fire in the Angeles National Forest. It actually came within 2 miles of the house and we had plenty of smoke and ash. It never got too bad in the house and it was before we had Scooter, but I remember my husband saying if we did have a bird, we'd probably take it to stay with friends or family a bit further from the fire area.

If it's diffuse smoke from fires many miles away, there is probably isn't much you CAN do.
