URGENT! Please help with info

Postby tattoo » Wed Aug 25, 2010 7:23 pm

the girl that works for me who has many birds just got a new quaker. The little girl was 4 months old and she just took the bird to the vet for a routine "new bird" check up and to make sure that she was clear of the liver issue that another quaker she had.

She just called me hysterical.. the vet did a blood test and the bird died. at the vets office. the vet said she went into cardiac arrest and he could not save her. He did a anterior blood test.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening. and yes this is a registered avian vet!
Help with any info or advise.

Sometimes animals just die without apparent cause. It could have been stress, but unlikely in a bred bird, it could have been some physical abnormality - maybe a bad heart valve - even a full necropsy might not show what happened, but having one done is your best bet to find out.

It could be vet error - maybe he held her too tight...but very unlikely with a specialist.

 That's horrible! And so scary. We try to do the best for our birds and then something like that happens. So sad

Especially because it was a VOLUNTARY vet visit! Just imagine someone who's had a parrot for 10, 30, 50 years and losing it to such a dumb mistake! This leads to a very interesting debate, is it worth it to take healthy looking parrots to the vet? Please share your thoughts on the other topic so we can return this one strictly to this case.

in her case, she is a great bird owner. she lost another bird because of a liver disease. since she just got the bird a few days ago, (she was only 4 months) she wanted to be sure little tango was ok plus it was a new bird healthy visit.
the other vet (avian) around here does the blood test through the toe nail....

what do other vets do

Oh, that is so sad. My condolences. :(

I feel worried enough just when they do the nail blood thing. Poor little feathered friend all wrapped in a towel Vet visits are very traumatic... for me. But it's for the best.

I had Earlyn for 6 years before we went to the vet. I'm glad I did though, because I know she's healthy and that there's a slight possibility of a heart murmur. Having regular checkups gives benchmarking just in case something goes wrong.
