How much does your parrot weigh?

Postby lzver » Wed Aug 25, 2010 8:50 pm

I finally found a decent kitchen scale while shopping today. It doesn't have a perch on it, but Lucy and Jessie didn't seem to have a problem standing on the flat surface tonight.

I'm just curious to see what the average weight seems to be. Specify species, gender and weight.

Lucy: Female Red-Bellied - 118 grams
Jessie: Male Senegal - 143 grams (he has lost 2 grams since his vet visit in July when we were told he was a little chubby. I have simply cut all seeds from his diet and stick to raw almonds as a real treat a couple times a week.

I doubt you could really observe a 2 gram loss over a period of time. Kili's weight fluctuates 5-10g a day easily. She can garble up 4g of pellets + 4g of water in a single meal without trouble. This is why I don't look for an average weight but rather establish a high and low to look for.

Kili's (female Senegal Parrot) normal weight range is 115-125g but lately I've been having her 120g-130g because she is heavily molting.

Truman's (male Brown Headed Cape Parrot) normal (pre injury) weight range was 320-330g, for the last few weeks he's been ranging 305-315g... but now he's been losing even more weight and I'm terminating hand feeding until I can reestablish his newest - even lower - weight range.

Yeah mine fluctuate as much as 20 grams in a day(but they are all much larger birds).

Rosie(9yo female vos) weighs between 430-440 right now, but she needs to put on another 10-20 consistent grams.
Norma(~14yo female CAG) weighs between 458-470 right now, but she needs to put on another 30-40 consistent grams as well.
The girls, I'd have to weigh them to remember. Rosie and Norma are both being weighed daily due to them both losing a noticeable amount of weight after the diet change. I can't weigh Hardy, but I'd wager he is a few grams overweight(he took to the new diet like it was candy... obviously lol!)

Brown Head, 135 grams when I had him vet checked six weeks ago.

I think I'll buy a scale to weigh him once in a while.

(little Zoulou is no longer with me)

If Baby is a senegal, and she only weight 80 grams, then yes, theres definately a problem. But I'm sure the vet would have picked up on that since a senegal weighing under 100 grams would be an absoliute sack of bones.... So I guess I'm minsunderstanding you.

Kika is probably a male senagal, just a year old. He weighs between 125 and 135 gr.
Guus, male cockatiel of about 6 months, weighs between 85 and 90 gr.
Kika: Senegal Parrot.
Guus: Cockatiel, Yellowcheek, cinnamon, pearl, pied.

Rista weighs approx 140g but she refuses to go on my scale so all I have is when she was last at the vet.

Briar's weight ranges between 98-103g

the budgies all weigh in between 35-37g but thats based on the vet as they aren't tame

Pippin the Senegal and Nicodemus the Red Belly are both in the 150 range.

The as yet to be named Jardine's is about 180.

Finally decided to weigh Samantha my senegal. She loves to lay upside down on her back and me and the kids were playing with her so I brought out my gram scale and she laid on it on her back. She or he (we don't know the sex) was 148grams. She feels perfect so I am going to assume this is normal weight for her. I think I am going to write this down for furture reference though if I ever feel she is underweight or overweight. She is 16 years old. Now to try and weigh my other birds. Does anyone have a blue fronted amazon or know the average weight on them because I know mine is definately over weight and is hard to control being that he is housed with 3 other birds. :amazon:
