Is my bird making me sick?

Postby saythat » Sat Aug 28, 2010 10:18 pm

I’ve had a fever for over a month now….every single day. It is a low grade fever and I also have a sore throat, and super fatigue. My doctor is running out of tests to do on me…..all test are negative. Is it possible that I may have gotten an illness from my parrot?

Can someone tell me what parrot illnesses are out there that may make a human sick? Is there a test that my doctor can do on me to find out if I’m sick because of my bird?

Thanks everyone - R

Psittacosis is the primary one that comes to mind.

I was thinking the same thing. But you might want to ask your docter, he might know more transmittable diseases.
Have you tried an allergietest for your parrot? It might be as simple as that. Allergies can give you a slight fever and sore throat too. The fatige could be a result of your continueus fever.

It sounds like allergies to me too. Why don't you try allergy fever medicine for a few days and you'll see.

I'm allergic to animals. I've had my parrot for 6 weeks now, and I'm just starting to be able to tolerate him better (I have to take medication but less I hope soon). Sometimes it takes a while, sometimes it never works.

Good luck !

If it is psittacosis, both you and bird need to be looked at...

sounds worse than allergies. if it's not what michael said, i think it's bird handler's disease. the woman who was fostering our sennie before us unfortunately came down with it, which is how we ended up with our sennie. but i still hope it's something else for your bird's sake and yours.

please let us know! I will be thinking about you. I hope it is just allergies.

I have allergies, and they can be really bad sometimes. I am currently fighting with a spell right now. Headache, sore throat, low grade fever, slight nausea and very light difficulty breathing. This is normal for me and I take daily allergy meds, but they still aren't enough. I get double sinus infections every year despite all the precautions I take. I also have RADS(reactive airway disease).

I'm hoping you are just plagued with something simple like allergies!

Hopefully just allergies however, definitely get checked out for Chlamydia. Ask your vet to test your bird and mention to your doctor that you own a bird. If the Chlamydia test on your bird is positive mention to your doctor you might have psittacosis. The only treatment is doxycycline or erythromycin.

I always advise clients who are sick for longer than a week with flu-like symptoms to get checked for chlamydia...

Good luck!!

Oh, and your bird will need to be treated as well of course if positive. As will other birds if you have any :senegal:
