Pests!!!

Postby pfinarffle » Mon Aug 30, 2010 6:37 am

I live in an apartment. Thus, things are conducive to procuring tons of pests. Thankfully, I haven't had issues with ants as I'm on the top floor. No cockroaches yet either (knock wood!). However, with the heat of summer there has been a huge food moth infestation. I've noticed that they really love dried bird food of all sorts, exactly what our Sennie eats. I've put the bags of food in the fridge to prevent them from becoming infested. However, the moths are also going to PeeWee's food bowl!!! I don't know if there's anything we can do to keep them out. Luckily, they don't like his sprouts. But PeeWee needs his pellets and dried veggies too. We've set up a couple moth traps, but those are only good for killing the males (they use female pheromones and glue the males to death). Any other ideas?

Jeesh thats a difficult one.
You can store the food in foodbins I guess. I use these: Image
But the food in the bowl is a different issue. Maybe you can feed him every couple of hours a small amount and take it away after he has eaten some. Peewee will get used to it eventually.

 Too bad he totally ignores the moths entirely. And I'm not about to start eating them in front of him to model that they can be food.

Yes, we keep it in the freezer/fridge when possible. It works. It's just the stupid food bowl that we can do nothing about. I thought about feeding him in two hour increments here and there. Problem with that is, of course, both I and my fiancé are at work all day for the majority of the week. I guess I wondered if there might not be some sort of natural moth deterrent that won't be harmful to the parrot. Maybe something herbal? Yeah right!
