I think they make a nice small "egg" cast iron pan. Not a preference or recommendation but just an example:

Personally I think food comes out better on cast iron anyway. Works great for eggs once seasoned. Though make sure you season it good before cooking eggs on it or they will stick and it will be a royal pain in the butt.

I got a cast iron waffle iron for xmas. I used to love making waffles in my teflon electric waffle iron. I gave that up since having birds and haven't had waffles in years because of it. Hey, one of the sacrifices for having a feathered friend ya know? Kathleen recently found out they made cast iron waffle irons so when some relative were bugging me what to get me I suggested that :D

MMM waffles!
That pan in the link looks good. I know about seasoning the pans - i have had to do that with my wok, and big pan. i think they are superb... and they can be taken camping too, which is a bonus... and i dont think i have ever seen a "broken" cast iron pan either!
parrots arent mere ornaments, and they're hardly "just a pet" they are intelligent and emotional creatures who want our companionship. As a bird owner, its a pleasure to make my parrots lives as happy, enriched and healthy as possible

They can crack. Especially if they get flash cooled. Like if it's really hot and you dump cold water in it to cool it quickly. It's important to slow cool them.

Would anyone like to write an article about cast iron covering at least the following topics?

-Why teflon bad for parrots
-Alternatives to teflon
-Pros/cons of each
-What kind of cast iron alternatives available
-How to season and care for cast iron
-FAQ about cast iron vs teflon

If anyone is interested let me know then you can write it and we'll make it a sticky. You can use these articles we've done as an indicator for size/content:

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=348

If no one is interested, I'll write one when I can get around to it.

There IS a new alternative that is bird safe -- it's ceramic based. I think any article should cover not just the ills of PTFE and the joys of cast iron, but also the other alternatives.

For poached eggs get a silicon poaching pod. Bird safe and it makes a super-neat poached egg.

Stainless can work pretty well even for eggs, but you need more oil and you need to start with everything at room temperature -- and you need a shiny clean stainless pan with a mirror finish and a thick bottom that heats evenly.

Seriously, I have two pieces of the Cuisinart stuff and it works VERY well: http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-GreenGourmet-Eco-Friendly-Nonstick-Anodized/dp/B001E96K7I

You seem really interested in this new green ceramic cookware. Are you considering buying some and reviewing it? We'd be thrilled to know. I probably would have given it a try some years ago but I've been quite content with my cast iron so I don't feel the need to experiment anymore. I did find stainless steal a nightmare compared to iron.

Well I meant a more thorough review. Mention the specific product, the ups, and downs. Why don't you start a new thread and tell us about them because I don't know anyone else who has tried them.

I got a couple pieces of the Cuisinart Green Gourmet pans recently (a skillet and a grill pan). I'm very happy with them so far - they're as good if not better than PTFE non-stick pans I've had in the past, as far as being non-sticky. Obviously I haven't had them long so I can't comment on their durability but they're good pans and my bird's still alive so I'm giving them a positive review so far.
