My African Gray is so sick and I can't find a vet!! Help!!

Postby ahmad » Sun Sep 05, 2010 2:26 pm

Hi, I bought an African gray about a month ago, it was behaving great, talking, singing, it was all perfect, until someone told me it should not keep eating nuts all the time, my parrot refused to eat anything else but sunflower nuts, so I toke the nuts off for about a day and a half, then I gave him carrots, apples, and cucumber, and he ate them.. Then my nightmare began.. He started vomiting, his waste got yellow and green, he got fluffy, and sleeps a lot, and lately his movement got so slow, this has been like this for a week, the problem I couldn't find a vet for parrots in my city, no one understood in them, can anyone help me please?? Am I watching my bird dying??? :(

Where are you located? If you know your location we can help you find a vet close by.

A diet based solely on sunflower seeds is bad.

A diet based soely on fresh veg and fruits is hard to maintain as it is hard to know which veg has which vitamins and so forth..

Are you not able to buy pellets? These contain the vitamins that the bird needs.

Do you know how old your bird is and how long its been on a sunflower seed diet? Can anyone here confirm it possible for a bird to get sick due to a form of detoxing from a diet switch like this? Either that or the new foods its been eating may have pesticides in them. Do an internet search on parrot pellets to see what others are talking about.

I'm not having much luck finding any avian vets in Palestine.

Do you have a way to do a local search for vets and then try to determine if their are any avian vets in your area?

Thanks again for all replies guys...

Jacko is about 1.5 years old, since i bought him he was eating sunflower mixed along with other seeds, and refused to eat anything else.. thats why i wanted him to eat fruit and veg. people told me its not good for his tummy to keep eating one type of food all the time, its just like humans..

parrot pellets, does it look like this: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2201/2792725897_940f1ddaec.jpg?v=0 ? because this is what i found googling..

Izver, i've spent three days searching for one from street to street and from farm to farm, the most close i found is a chickens vet, but he said Parrots are wild animals and he has no experience in them, he couldnt help...

did you swap him straight onto frsh fruit with no sunflower seeds at all? if so if he has been eating nothing else for 1 and a half years and thats suddenly taken away and not given to him at all that would make him very sick. its like a vegetarian not eating meat for a long time them all of a sudden eating nothing but meat would make a vegetarian very sick (thats what happened to my friend) also if hes never had fruit and veges his whole life this is a extremely sudden change, i would of gradually gon from 100% sunflower seeds then 90/10 for 3-5 days then 80/20 for 3/4 days and so on until your down to about a 30/70 ratio

im not saying this is what has made your bird sick i dont know but thats my suggestion. im not a vet and i would strongly advise the opinion of a vet if you find one!

these are the pellets other members are talking about
