bird poo

Postby HeartHaze » Thu Sep 16, 2010 6:16 am

so now im concerned with Quincy's poo. before bedtime, i make sure i clean his poop tray and change everything, so that in the morning i could see what his poo will be. in the morning, his poo is the normal poo (tube like thing and everything), but in the afternoon/throughout the day his poo would sometimes have too much urine or the poo is not formed in a tube-ish way. i smell his poo but there's no bad smell or anything.
i feed him pellets (hagen tropican) and i give him mung sprouts, squash, cucumber, wheat grass and carrots. these 4 are the most common 'healthy' foods i give him. there are times i give him broccolli and others too. i dont know if the healthy foods i give him cause his poo to look like that. for 2 days, i stopped giving him veggies. i only leave his pellets and water and i think it improved a little? i think the poo was a little bit formed but still not a tube shape. it's like a tube poo chopped into smaller pieces. im still monitoring his poo. oh and i dont give him seeds.
he doesn't show any signs that he's sick. he plays, flies and bites :|

so do you think he's healthy?
should i continue monitoring his poo without those veggies?
should i try giving him a teaspoon of seeds everyday? (note:everyday i train him and the reward i give is sun flower seeds)
can too much water affect his poo? (although im not sure if he does drink a lot of water)

the vet near our place is only available every thurs coz he works in his main clinic in the other days of the week. im planning on bringing him to the vet next thurs if this persists.
i brought him to his 1st vet check-up last month and he said my bird was healthy. quincy sneezes occasionally and i told him about that but he said i wouldnt worry that much(but there are times that i really worry.. i dont know why). in his first vet check up he didnt get any kind of test like blood test or anything. i've researched about this vet before and many people bring their birds to him. he's also a known vet in our country. the breeder whom i bought quincy from also recommended him. he doesn't only check on birds but also other exotic animals. the vet said that he's a small bird and he doesn't recommend doing such tests to him. what's your say on this?

sorry if there are a lot of statements and questions here XD i would again appreciate your opinions :) also if you would need additional info that i forgot to input here just ask away :)

thanks

You're not over thinking it, you're being a really great parrot owner :) Good for you for asking questions and being so aware and attentive to your bird's health. Your bird is lucky to have someone who cares so much :)

Eating fresh fruits and veggies *will* affect a bird's droppings by making them runnier/less formed because they have a higher water content than, say, seeds or pellets. They're very, very healthy to give your bird as a part of his balanced diet so don't stop! You're doing the right thing :)

I would call your vet before going in. It sounds like he's okay but if you're nervous it never, ever hurts to check. Also - use Google to fin out more about reading parrot poops. I did a nice long search on that the other day (don't ask) and I found out a lot of information about things to look for, symptoms, and the conditions that cause them - and when to be concerned enough to go in.

How shall I say this....not every poop is perfect? It's important to monitor the droppings, but if they vary here and there it's okay. It's also good to monitor weight in conjunction with the poo. Do you have a scale? I would recommend keeping a weight record (in grams) which will also help to ease your mind as you see an average high and low weight arise from your record keeping.

So Google, but also call your vet and ask them. It sounds like your bird is new? So being attentive and concerned in the beginning is normal, and it'll get easier and less worrying as you get familiar with his routines and diet and droppings, etc.
