mayonnaise

Hi everyone!

I have a question regarding mayonnaise. I was eating it and my parrot just ran towards my place and got some mayonnaise on his beak. He whipped it off but im afraid he may have licked a little bit. I know its toxic for the bird so I am really worried. Does anyone know what can happen?

I don't think mayo is toxic. If it was homemade with raw eggs, there is risk of salmonella, and it has salt and fats so it isn't healthy. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but mayo is just oil, vinegar, eggs, salt and usually mustard.

I would think the tiny amount the bird may have ingested would have no ill effects. My understanding with mayonnaise is that it goes bad (rancid) very fast and that is the problem for the birds, afterall it is egg based and we know they can eat eggs. I would just monitor your birds next couple of poops and make sure it is drinking lots of water....

Yeah, the parrot should be fine.

He only had a little bit. It's not like he was swimming in it. I'm sure he's fine :)
