Good Exercise?

Postby Dodger » Sat Nov 27, 2010 8:39 am

I allow my 25 year old OWA; Gort to play with my 1 yr. old 6" tall Yorkshire Terrier/Dachshund. The basis of this play is Goku - the pup runs around Gort and Gort has to try and catch him. Its done on my bed as the surface is soft so Gort doesnt always have to be on a hard surface. He enjoys playing on my bed and hides underneath the covers. The sessions are ALWAYS supervised and Im within a few inches from the whole session. So I was just wondering if this was good exercise for Gort as he isnt much of a flier... And likes mainly junkfood (trying to switch him to pellets and better veggies and fruits still...), so trying to get him to do stuff that's healthy for him besides sitting on either his perch in his cage or ontop of his cage or on a perch wherever I am... I figured giving him short 10-15 min. sessions to play with Goku would help. He doesnt seem to get aggrivated about Goku's presence and how he tries to play with Gort and makes little chirp like noises when they play. He seems to like it :)

I will get a video of it probably later today and put it up on YouTube so everyone can see. But just wanted to know if this was good exercise or if it could be over-doing it?

I am sure it probably is good exercise. It does sound a bit risky, though, so be extra careful you don't get distracted. Dogs can be quite quick. At least cats usually try to sneak up and pounce, giving you some warning.

I also hear about people "flying" their birds on their hands, dropping the hand while cruising around so they flap and get some exercise -- mostly with clipped birds, but I don't see why it wouldn't work with a lazy flighted bird as well.

Well Goku is a very fragile little guy and wouldnt be able to hurt Gort. Gort on the otherhand would be able to do quite a number on Goku. Goku only sand probably an inch taller than Gort if even that. But I do watch them both like a hawk :)

I do let Gort flap his wings... He usually does it whenever hes sitting on my arm or ontop of my laptop but get winded pretty quick... He's a butterball :D
