When to stop porridge?

Postby Tandi » Tue Nov 30, 2010 9:53 am

Jodi still eats porridge for breakfast and supper and i'm not sure for how much longer she should be getting this? She is just over 3 months old now. She does eat her other food during the day, but i'm not sure if she is eating enough to sustain herself without the porridge. When should i start cutting it down to one porridge feed a day, and then when should i stop feeding the porridge?

Thanks Richard! I have cut down on the amount she has for breakfast, and she really doesn't seem to eat a lot of porridge at breakfast time. She eats more porridge at dinner time, so I think I could probably cut out the morning feed. Also, after each feed she eats a fair amount of her cooked mix and then she will snack on her fruity pellets! During the day I have 2 bowls in her cage with her cooked mix and the pellets, then I also leave fresh fuit and veg on her skewer (which she seems to really be enjoying)...I'm just worried she doesn't get enough...

Also, can they eat tomatoes?

hey, tomatoes are ok, be careful abouy leaving cooked food out for too long and it might spoil Is jodi drinking water ? some babies depend on the formula for water. Is she dipping her pellets (very common) if she keeps dirting up her water you might try adding a bottleand only give her a dish to bathe in, i'm glad to hear that jodi eats different foods as that seems to be a large part of having a healthy/happy amazon .PS winter time is a good time to let her have a little extra fat, ie; a Tbl spoon of sunflower seeds or a few nuts , be careful not to over do it and have her depend on them everyday . the pellets should be the main stay of her diet. good luck Richard

I'm not sure if she is drinking...but I assume she is! She doesn't dirty up her water at all! Maybe I should rather have a bottle for her water, and then leave her a bowl of water to bathe in like you say!? She seems to be starting to eat more by herself now, so I think it would be okay to start phasing out her porridge! I give her fresh cooked food every day, whatever she has left for the day I chuck out and then give her fresh food. I find that when it ks been out for a full day it goes hard...so that's when I replace it with a fresh batch!

How much should she be eating during a day of her cooked food and her pellets? Like how much in table spoon measures? I'd just like to have a rough idea to measure against? How much should she be eating to sustain herself?

Wow that's hard to say, if she was just on pellets you could weigh them and keep track, but the fresh stuff screws that up . the cooked stuff i'd only leave out for an hour or two, then give her the pellets the rest of the day, i have problems with fruit flies if i leave that out all day also. I'd put the water bottle near the pellets and leave the water bowl in until i was sure that she's using the bottle. Let me know how it goes.
