Dehydrated Fruits and Veggies

Postby KNG » Sat Dec 25, 2010 10:59 pm

What do you all think about the nutritional value of dehydrated fruits and veggies? I am thinking about buying a food dehydrator to make my own for my birds, especially during the winter months when fresh fruit is very expensive. Plus, the food would last much longer.

Currently I feed my green cheek conure dehydrated coconut, pineapple, and papaya, which she loves. Strangely enough, she doesn't like any of those things fresh. I want her to eat more vegetables, especially.

The budgies are the same way I find. They love their dried apricots.

Don't forget sprouting! The Nanday and Budgies love mung bean sprouts! Will be following this subject closely thinking dehydrated foods would be fine...have a great day!

The main reason to prefer fresh fruits and veggies, I think would be the water content itself. Some birds get most of their water from their food.

I agree with entrancedbymyGCC; However, as stated above some birds prefer eating dried fruits and they always have water available in their bowls. Then there are people like me, who are out of their home for long periods of time. Leaving fresh fruits in our parrots' bowl is not such a great idea. Your home will be full of flies in no time! :-s

I think it's a great idea to get a dehydrator.
