my Green Cheek conure hurt his little Claw :(

Postby PrincessWoodget » Mon Jan 03, 2011 7:53 pm

(When I say he, it usually refers to my GCC)
My mom was with him :meyers: ( green cheek conure) and he flew to the door, she thought he flew to my room..and she closed the door and it hurt his little claw . Im so worried, I stayed with him all night watching his claw, hes been retracting it into his feathers...and well, his temperment is still the way he usually is but hes really hesitating not to stand on his right claw and when he does he starts limmping...its really breaking my heart. Hes not whimpering or anything but his claw is really really hot and he keeps it up in his feathers.
Ive called some vets to see if my mom and I can take him tomorrow . Im just scared of what the vet might do, is this really bad? like ..Okay I know this sounds stupid but Im super attached to him (GCC) he cant die or need surgery from it right? I dont think its broken..i mean...he uses it still but it does look like its a little painful..but he doesnt scream when he steps on it.

I dont know help!.....

The only avian vet I found is an hour away from the house and only has a slot at 10:00am. I know one time my dad took him in the car and he got car sick and threw up everywhere....if I cover the cage in the car will it make a difference?

I really pray my mom will let me take him to the vet

I haven't dealt with an injury like that myself, but it sounds as if the vet visit is a good idea. I can imagine that surgery might be an option if it is fractured. The degree of heat you describe would make me a little concerned that there could be a fracture. I doubt this is the kind of injury that's likely to be fatal, though. And hopefully it is just badly bruised. If you can get to the avian vet, that would be the best thing. If not... there is a good chance it will be OK, but I personally wouldn't want to just cross my fingers and hope.

Thanks for your response, it is very much appreciated. It hasnt gotten better, and my mom agreed to take him to the vet. Im half excited half nerve wrecked, The whole reason my dad wont take him to the vet is because he claims that they will clip his wings and he will hate us. o.0

I dont know where he got that from but I doubt its any better to leave him with a possibly broken claw, just because were afraid he will hate us for clipping his wings.

..sometimes, I dont get dads lol.

Very few modern avian vets would heavily push wing clipping, and NO vet should EVER do something like that without your permission. I doubt your bird would resent YOU for a wing trim, however, and he would get used to the situation pretty quickly unless it was a really over-severe clip that made him drop like a rock. And the wings would grow out. But I would be very angry at a vet that did such a thing without my permission. I wouldn't necessarily be angry, though, if the vet expressed an opinion on the matter, but I think flight is now much more accepted as an option by vets than was the case in the past.

I must know-- how is your conure?? I know that it's been a month or two since your last post, but now I'm really curious about how he/she is!

I have a gcc name Buddy, and I had a similar situation a couple of months ago. I'm not even sure what happened to him; I got him of his sleep cage one morning, and all of us a sudden he was limping and wouldn't stand on one of his feet. Like your bird, mine wasn't whimpering or anything, but I was still so, so worried. I took Buddy to the vet a few days later, and he thankfully ended up being totally fine. The vet thought that he might have twisted his foot at night somehow (weird).

Since the person who responded to your post seems so knowledgeable (I'm sorry that I can't remember your name, but your pic with your bird is really cute!), I just thought that I would ask you a couple things:

I had my conures toenails clipped, and when he came back almost every one of his little toes was bloody (with the coagulant powder on though), which the vet said basically had to be done if I didn't want to have to be bringing him back in every other month. That was a couple of months (at least) ago if not longer, and he STILL can't adequately grip anything with this nails (like my shirt, or any other sort of fabric), which isn't a big deal, but not the best since he's clipped and can easily just fall off my should. The vet seems reputable, so I'm just wondering if this is normal or if she overclipped. She also checked out his wings (which I clip myself and have for years) and said that I've been clipping the wrong feathers all this time-- the outermost long feathers rather than the feathers in the middle area of his wing. I have never heard nor seen this before on a bird, so I guess that's why I'm questioning this vet altogether. I just want to get the best care for my bird! :gcc:

Thanks so much for any help, and again, I hope that your little conure is doing great!
