Is it common for Cockatiels to have strokes?

Postby SamiShizu » Mon Nov 30, 2009 6:02 pm

My female cockatiel randomly had a stroke, she was done laying for the year, and came out clear during the medical exam.

Is it common? or should I be worried?

She's doing fine now, but she shakes a lot, and her head is always tilted upside down. She is now blind in her left eye and will spin in circles if there's nothing to grip. But she can perch and eat by herself.

Poor baby!

I've read that strokes aren't very common, but when they occur they usually occur in older birds. I'm sorry to say this, but you just have to evaluate whether your bird can live with the new problems as a result of the stroke and whether or not your bird is greatly suffering because of the blindness, shaking etc. It's a really sad situation. If you are interested in learning more about strokes in birds, check out this article I found about the topic: http://www.birds-online.de/gesundheit/g ... all_en.htm It gives some advice about how to care for birds who have suffered from a stroke. It's very thorough and I learned a lot about bird strokes that I hadn't known before.
