Postby NabyL23 » Mon Jan 10, 2011 5:51 am

Hello all,

well i own a 2 month old cinnamon green cheek conure, cutest little thing very tame and very well behaved, and also it fully flighted, i don't clip wings feels in human... my problem is he/she not sure yet is not eating seeds by himself! i see lucky (that's his/her name) try sometimes. but always call out for baby food.. im trying to reduce the amount of baby food i give him to make him hungry so he will try more to eat by himself only give 2 times a day but very littel, yet enough for this hunger to go away alittle. but dose not seem to work that well and also lucky is in a very nice big cage and seeds and pallets always there in the cage where he can reach easily ... any ideas and dose anyone know around in how many months cinnamon green cheek conure start eating by themselves..

THANKS GUYS //

Usually wean at about 12 wks, What did the people you get the bird from tell you to do? Why would you buy an unweaned bird? Give me some more info and maybe i can help you though this.

I'd take him back to the breeder and ask for them to wean him.

Okay, please read this.

What you're doing is FORCE weaning the bird, by making it hungry so it would eat solids.
You DON'T want to do that, because baby birds develop serious behavioral problems and grow up to be nervous, emotionally unstable birds. Force weaning is awful, and I've seen birds at petstores that have been force weaned that are obnoxious, shy, and whiny. You DON'T want that.
You said yourself, it keeps begging. That's bad, and could lead to chronic personality issues down the road.

**** What you need to do is, ABUANDANCE wean. By that, you keep offering the bird handfeeding formula at feeding times until he CHOOSES to stop accepting baby food for a couple days. ****

Please please please listen to this, and keep offering the handfeeding formula along with solid food until your baby decides he doesn't want the formula anymore.

I've done so much research on birds, and have been on pleeeeeeenty of reputable breeders' websites, and FORCE WEANING is AWFUL, and often produces birds with emotional issues. This is a baby that will live with you up to THIRTY years.

KEEP OFFERING THE FORMULA, DON'T STOP UNTIL THE BABY DECIDES HE DOESN'T WANT IT.

I was very frustrated with my breeder cause I so wanted to bring Windy home and he kept saying he wasn't ready he wasn't ready he wasn't ready.

I'm so glad he did that though. I knew nothing.

Good luck with your baby ... listen to these wise bird folks they know what they are talking about.
