Postby MIKEPOPER » Mon Jan 10, 2011 12:33 pm

hii all,
as some of you may know i have a sun conure.(he's 9 month old)
and the problem is that the breeder i bought my parrot from didnt asked me if i want to clip and cliped my parrot without asking me...
so as you understand my didnt fly even ones :(
and i have 2 questions:
1)how long will it take them to grow back(i have him for about 5 month and nothing)?
2)will he learn to fly alone or shoud i do someting?

Hey Micheal , #1 yes they'll grow back, most on the next molt which should occur soon, if you were to pluck the cut flights they will grow back quicker but , plucking them will be painful and Kesha won't think much of the experience. I'd suggest waiting for them to grow back with the next molt.#2 she's young enough that she should learn to fly pretty quick if given the chance, Micheal has some training threads on teaching your bird to target back and forth between 2 perches, if you start with the perches close enough together you should have no trouble "teaching" her to fly. Good luck , Richard PS can you post a pic of her spread wing? Also now would be a good time to get her used to a harness.

I got Einstein already clipped. His feathers are now 100% grown back and he has full flight. When the new feathers started growing in, he did pick off a couple of the clipped feathers. Just let nature run it's coarse. He'll be flying before you know it!

I'm no expert, but that does look like a bad cut. I doubt she'd be able to glide with her wings like that. She's still young though, and I think with a lot of patience, her feathers will grow back in.

Wow micheal , Kesha really got whacked!!yes that's a pretty severe clip, usually only need to cut 6-7 on a young male, at most. The good news is they will grow back if not completely on this molt than surely by the next.

wow I agree, those wings have been butchered. It is very hard to find someone that can clip wings perfectly thats why i decided to leave lorenzo flighted. I did ask the breeder to clip his wings when I got him but she only cut about 3 feathers equally and excellently on each side and hes actually always been able to fly regardless. hes also only 8months old and if the wings are outstretched you can still see the clip however he really can fly perfectly all around the room without a problem. fully flighted.
I believe a molt is about every 6 months but i dont know when the first one since lorenzo hasnt had a full molt yet either.
It might take kesha a little longer with so many feathers clipped but i think hell be flying before you know it- regardless if you can still see the clipped feathers or if hes molted yet.
