foraging for nectar mix

Postby TheNzJessie » Tue Jan 11, 2011 1:20 am

if you have seen Jango foraging for his fruits inside in munch ball and bell pepper you will know what im going to explain here. Jango now forages for 100% of his fruit diet. but lorikeets are nectar eaters and in the wild forage form flower to flower all day for nectar (like bees) lately i have been giving Jango more flowers and less and less made up wet nectar mix in a bowl (as its summer and there is plenty to choose from)

but his wet nectar mix is still a large part of his diet and im trying to find a way to incorporate it into a foraging object, but its proving hard because the mix is the same consistency as porrage

foraging has helped so much with Jangos screaming problem, he seems to really enjoy getting him food and wastes less because hes working for it

any ideas on how i can get his wet mix into a foraging object?

i often place a piece of paper partly over Missy's food bowls and secure it with a rubberband so she has to rip the paper off to get her food...I'm sure this would work on Jango's nectar bowl too :)

if you can find one try an empty film cannister witha top connect it to something to hang it with and see if jango can pop the top off of it to get to his necter! :)

It's good to hear that he isn't screaming.

This is simple, but I think it could work.

I have seen cup-style foraging toys where the game is to get the beak under the cup lip and/or hold the cup open. Something like that would probably work for wet nectar, although if it was "swingy" it might spill. You could mock up something like that with stuff around the house, I'd guess. I'm thinking of things like this:

I guess another option might be to use cone-shaped paper cups with just a little nectar in each and place them around the cage... just punch holes and tie them up... more like flowers...

And what about a small hummingbird feeder? Do you have those?
