Has anyone tried offering soup to their bird?

Postby javelin » Tue Jan 11, 2011 2:46 am

We're into almost our 2nd month taking care of Sunflower and while he's come around being more comfortable eating off my hand, he hasn't taken anything else other than seeds and oats. I've tried mincing greens, fruits and carrots but he barely touches them.

I've read somewhere that mashed baby food or blended vegies may be good alternatives to feed our little critters. I've also heard from bird owners that there are "vitamins" that you can mix in to their drinks.

My question is, how about soup? Anyone here tried cooking up vegetable soup and letting their pets drink from it? Would it be a healthy thing for them?

Thanks in advance for the replies. Awesome forum this one!

yeah, I made some carrot/squash all-natural, healthy etc.. soup from M&M...took one sip and thought it was disgusting, so I let Akilah perch on the bowl and sip it. She really enjoyed it but shook her head with every sip, oh what a mess...

I don't think I'd give them any soup unless I knew it was homemade and meat free. I'm not sure if they can properly digest meat or not, so I'll stick to what I know is good.

The can eat meat. Some protien is good for them, either from meat or egg (dairy is OK in very small quantities but it is harder to digest). Chicken, egg, chicken bones.... with soup I'd look more for something that is low in sodium and broth based rather than creamy. It's the sodium that's likely to be a problem.

I'd much rather my birds get protein from eggs, then from meat. It's natural for them to eat eggs, not so to eat another bird or meat.

Does anyone know if parrots sometimes eat bugs in the wild? I think about robins, and how they feed worms to their young, so do parrots ever eat them? I'm sure there's plenty of bugs and insects in the tree's and on the ground where they get their seeds.

I understand that insect protein does play a role in some, if not all, wild parrot diets. Most parrot nutrition books and articles encourage feeding a little lean meat, FWIW.

My husband tried that once with his cockatoo. Apparently the bird was not impressed with food that moves and he threw them all over the room. Can you imagine! Yikes!
