Broken Tiel Toe

Postby meowingaround » Tue Jan 11, 2011 11:06 pm

We had a mishap here yesterday Willow got under my chair.. and I didn't realize and well now his middle toe is broken. *cries* Anyway rushed him to the vet who prescribed antibiotics and an iodine wash.. twice daily, as it's an open wound as well as a break. *sobs*

I've put him back upstairs in a separate cage as the vet recommended as much rest as possible. He's pretty much slept since we got back yesterday he's eaten some millet and had a lil water when I held him for his treatment.

Only he didn't say how long I should do that.

I've never had any animal with a broken bone or serious cut before.. and this is well both.. he told me the middle toe could end up turning black and falling off *horrified* But as of now it looks , better?

It's bruised and he's using his wing to balance.. I've provided a wubby and layed it sideways so he can rest fully without having to actually work and balance while resting.. i've put a millet on the wubby so he can eat right there and the water is just a hop away , the actual feed is across the cage but i've put a perch and he's using the bars.

I'm just horrified and shocked and traumatized. He seems to be doing much better with this than I am, he doesn't want to be handled, and besides the two times I took him out to wash his foot/give him his drop of antibiotic... I've left him very much alone.

But I don't want to overdo the alone thing either.

I feel soooo bad :(

I'm so sorry :(
Accidents happen to the best of us though, so don't beat yourself up too bad. You've done exactly what you were supposed to do, and you took him to the vet. Listen to what he says, and keep a watchful eye on Willow.
I hope that everything heals well! Willow is in my thoughts :)
Be sure to keep us posted on his recovery.

I know how you feel. You just need to take it easy and work through it day by day. Luckily the self-healing powers are incredible. I didn't think Truman would be able to walk again when he broke his pelvic bone but now he's up and around as though it had never happened. The vet told me he could end up with a lame foot the rest of his life but with a lot of patience, healing, and physical therapy he has recovered 100%. This is what I hope for Willow.

The absolute most important thing is not to rush the healing. You may see some improvement or just want to play with him, but it is very important to give it as much time as possible. Keep the foods tasty and simple. Provide mushy food too. If he is having too much difficulty walking you may want to keep him in a tub or to put a towel on the bottom of the cage and keep him on there a while. Keep him warm too. With less movement and tough circumstances they get cold more easily.

Keep us updated on progress and we hope for all the best.

Sorry to hear that willow got hurt ... but you got him to a vet right away which is good.

As Michael suggested getting a tub with a towel is probably the best thing to do right now. If you don't have anything like that available, put some perches low in the cage and towels in the bottom in case he falls. Also try to keep him as warm as possible. When birds are ill they expend a lot of energy trying to keep warm. If he is kept warm then that energy can go to healing. Don't hesitate to ask further questions. In particular, Michael can offer some great advice.

Good luck and keep us updated as to how Willow is doing.

I've been using a space heater on low with a humidifier in the room to keep that room extra cozy but not too dry...

This morning he said hello when I pulled off the cover and sang a little bit.

Mushy food?

he likes elbows ... i'll make him some now :)

Oh you haven't read the stuff about Truman's injury. You may want to check out some of this stuff to see more about how I got through it and you may find some helpful advice for dealing with a parrot with a leg injury.
