I also suspect he broke at least two toes on that foot. You'll have to excuse me my vet is actually great with animals but is really bad with people. And I was in a state. He said one toe could fall off, so I assumed he meant just one toe was broken.

But after watching him as he gets better it seems like he broke the two front toes on his left foot.

*cringes*

he's also moved himself up to the perch, instead of sitting on the wubby, and I adjusted the feed/water dish and he's eating much better, loving his seed/pellet mix.

I keep them on a seed/ pellet mix because we have two pets stores in this town.. one sells expired foods... and the other sometimes does not have tiel pellets.

This is gonna take awhile to heal though *sad* but he's in much better spirits.. he's also much less sleepy .. i mean still far more than normal.. but he wants to be scratched and held and to have the carrier next to the big cage so he can visit his brother.

And yes they are sooooo tough!! amazing really and he never complains well except when I have to take him out and clean his foot and give him his antibiotic.. but I imagine that hurts a great deal, and he's not even complaining that much about that anymore either. Gotta love em

How wonderful that Willow is on the mend. And what a gorgeous name!
There's nothing wrong with your seed/pellet mix, in fact that's exactly what my vet suggested for my porky Tiel, something about an all pellet mix effecting Tiel's kidneys?? She's. Nice trim girly now, and much happier.

Wow today we made a couple huge leaps.

First off the big ugly scabs both came off.. just a couple little under scabs left. Foot/toe is a nice healthy pink.. YAY!!!

Second Willow began placing weight and walking this very strange gimp walk today, just a step here and there.. but it's progress

So before bed tonight I'm going to let him on my bed for a bit to see if he wants to move around a bit more.. warm/soft/safe place for him to do a little gentle walking if he desires
Oh also we're done with antibiotics woot woot.
Just finishing up the wash since there are scabs and it's a foot and there's birdy poo and yeah lol

I've heard that bit as well from both the breeder I got him from and my vet so yeah I'm not quite sure... but both birds are of good weight, not overweight.

And thank you, I chose Windy's name based on Willow's name.. so we have a theme.. although Willow was my friends bird first, but she kept him covered most of every day cause of the noises he made.

Then when she needed to move I kinda asked if he could join my family.. I always felt so bad for him always being covered. Course his foot wasn't broken so .. yeah o_0

Since it is the toes and not the leg, the best physical therapy will be somewhat different. Of course do not start it prematurely but do not wait too long from when you think he is 90% back to normal or better. To make sure the toes revive properly, you'll want him using them as much as possible once they are healed. I think two ways to achieve this is by having very variable perch thicknesses and encouraging a lot of walking on variable perches.

So if you have perches that start thin at one end and get thicker and thicker toward the other, this is good. This requires the bend of the toes to be different as the diameter changes. By getting him to walk back and forth (with targeting or luring) helps increase the number of repetitions beyond just the normal daily amount. If there is minute pain, this additional encouragement helps exercise to overcome it and heal better. Just be careful about doing this too soon so wait and see how he is recovering.

Thanks Michael. I have a perch that would work well for that. He's not close to ready for that now though. Just hobbling around a bit. When he's perched though he still keeps it tucked up behind him 99% of the time, yesterday was the first time I saw him do anything different in that regards too and it was a very flat gimpy sorta stand with most of the balance on the forward part of his toe, not near the break.

Right now he's sitting on my shoulder with the foot in a downward position, toenail doing the balancing. And I'm pretty sure from watching that most of it is just a balancing trick he's learned... not actual weight bearing.

The gimpy steps though.. those are weight bearing... :)

But happy still he's making progress and it's not always tucked up.

They say it takes about 3 weeks for a broken bird bone to heal it's only been 1 as of yesterday... I'm amazed really how well it's going.

I just put Willow on the hard floor to see how that would be and he did bout 10 fast pretty normal steps.. no very pronounced limp..

yes i'm sharing basically everything lol

I'm just wow.. really amazing

I'm gonna do that a couple times a day this week just while the bone grows a bit stronger, then next week I'll see where he is as far as perch rehab :)

Oh he's also grinding his beak.. first time since this happened

Tomorrow I'm going to start Physical Therapy with Willow he's using his foot and bending it a bit on his own now, it's been 2 weeks as of yesterday ... don't want to wait too long.

I've brought the smaller cage back downstairs for good, they are done being separated, but for now they will each have their own sleeping cage. The sleeping cages are set up so they are covered together and basically the smaller stand is supported by the large stand so the cats can't topple that cage/stand over.. and the birds can always see/be near each other.. but at night both will have their own space as Windy is a bit of a turd and Willow isn't much in the mood to be chased about all the time .

I have two perches that have varying diameters and millet, I seriously hope he cooperates. o_o

My other concern is his foot is very dry now, I've been spritzing it with their bath spray but that doesn't seem to be doing much good. I'm wondering if I should give him a shower or apply something else?

Maybe you should try aloe vera on his foot?
