Herbal Remedies for Parrots

Postby idlepirate » Wed Jan 12, 2011 6:58 pm

I just thought id share a link to this article I found while searching up if CHAMOMILE is ok for parrots (I drink alot of chamomile tea and lorenzo almost goes crazy for it). Turns out its good for parrots in stressful situations, it helps calm them down.

I found this article really interesting, lots of herbal remedies which are good for humans and parrots, incase of small injuries or medical problems.

If someone has already posted this or talked about this already I appologize.

I would personally look for more than one source when it comes medicinal herbs. The ones that are genuinely effective are in effect pharmaceuticals without the systematic testing, and given how much smaller a dose it takes to affect the tiny body of a parrot, it makes me a bit nervous. And I'm the one that seems typically reckless around here! Culinary herbs in food served in a proportional serving size are one thing, but I'd be very cautious about supplements. IMO a drug is a drug even if it came more directly from a plant than the average.

im not suggesting to try them but i thought it was an interesting article.things like aloe vera are good. Ive read in numerous places that its good for plucking parrots or on cuts. its nice to know what some herbs are good for incase the situation would come about. people have always used things like rescue remedy on cats and dogs for long travels, as long as everything is completely natural and it has been looked into about doses. Yes you cant compare parrots to dogs and cats and I wouldnt use anything like this without confirmation from a vet first. id be more interested in the plants and herbs themselves, not the premixed bottles you buy in health stores.
Nobodys gonna have these plants just lying around at home, besides things like ginger.
It would be interesting to ask a vet about some of the other herbs.
