unfortunatly vet visit are apart of owning any pet, a vets advice and care would surpass home remedies such as homepathic. vets dont go to university for 5 years for nothing :) if you have a sick bird you're the owner and in control of the bird so you should provide the bird with all the car including vet care it needs

Choose a reputable and responsible breeder. Use a quarantine period. Make responsible decisions about what you expose your bird to (fumes, food, other animals, drafts).

The cost depends on what tests are performed (if any) and where you live. Avian vets are more specialized but it's important to find a vet that specializes in birds. You could call your nearest avian vet and tell them you're a future bird owner. If they think you're a possible future customer, I'm sure they won't mind if you ask them questions.

Just to give you an idea, if you get a full "New Bird Exam" done with all the tests: psittacosis, gram stain, pbfd, polyoma (some vets recommend it, some don't depending on breeder/age), chemistry panel, blood work, choanal slit, etc. it should run you an average of around $500 depending on your vet. And that's just for bringing the baby home.

Vets are expensive, but avian vets are REALLY expensive !

Think about it.
