Stuck legband!

Postby littleKiWi » Wed Jan 26, 2011 10:09 pm

So this evening in looking at Kiwi I noticed her "bracelet" was missing. Upon further inspection, it has migrated above the joint in her leg. I've tried to gently straighten her leg, but she won't really let me and I don't want to force her. She's about 2 years old, but I've only had her for 2 weeks so she still has some learning to do with me.
To compound the problem, she is much nippier today than she's ever been before. I haven't really figured out her moods yet, but I'm wondering if her leg may be bothering her and making her grumpy.

In any case, I can take her to the vet tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions and also let me know how much I should be freaking out.
Thank you!

If it isn't where it belongs, I would see the vet. In some cases, cutting the band off is called for, and this might be one, if it can't go back where it belongs.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I'm not quite sure how it got up there, but I'm afraid if it's a little too tight than there's probably enough swelling to prevent it from going back down. :/

Try some vaseline to get the legband down. Just in case it's causing any constriction. Still get the band cut off. It sounds like it is too big for the bird.

This same thing happened to Merlin last week (maybe something to do with all the hanging updside down? ;) ). At the time there didn's seem to be any discomfort and he let me handle his leg, so I was gently able to wiggle it back down to the proper place without much trouble. He is only 8 months old so I am hoping there will still be some growth and this will stop happening, but now I am checking on a daily basis. If it keeps happening I may consider having it cut off, but for now I will wait and see.

Personally, for safety reasons I still say get the band removed if it goes over the "knee". Then get the bird microchipped for identification purposes.

I hate legbands. I always have them removed, you never know when they can get caught somewhere. Jazz's band was too big on top of that, so I had it removed under anesthesia when I got him. I had him tested for avian diseases (the mandatory ones to put him in parrot daycare around here) at the same times (requires drawing blood), so it was a good opportunity to do everything at once without stressing the bird. Oh, and I had him microchipped at the same time ! Not even 10 minutes after the whole thing, he was fully awake. We got home, he ate as if nothing happened, and he was right on top of his cage to play after that.

I would definitely have it removed.

To Roger P, your baby was finished growing a long time ago. You should have the leg band removed, your asking for trouble in my opinion.
