Macaw Weight?

Postby Wingz » Thu Jan 27, 2011 10:36 pm

Hey all, so I've been handfeeding my baby B&G for about 2 weeks now and when I first got her she was 678g ( severly underweight ) and now she is approx. 760g. Very pleased with her progress, but I was just wondering if there were any Macaw experts in handfeeding out there that would know what an average weight for a 5 month old B&G would be and when she will reach her adult weight. And if a weight gain of 82g is average after about 10ish days. She is on 2 handfeedings daily, one when I wake up of 90cc and one before bed time of the same. Have been moistening her pellets and leaving her tropimix dry and it seems like she has been eating some. I know it depends on the bird when they wean but I'd just like a little bit of reassurance :). I know on average they fluctuate from 800-1100g at ideal weight and I was just wondering when she will be close enough to this weight. She is flapping her wings a lot trying to fly, but her wings are clipped. I know weight loss is common during her first flight period but I'm just a little worried about my little girl. Any tricks or ideas to get her to gain and maintain weight a little faster? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also, when I first got her, her keel bone was very predominent and sticking out a lot almost sharp. Definetely not like that anymore but it is still sticking out and there's a little bit of muscle on each side but she still feels a tad underweight. Clean bill of health from vet though, other than being underweight ( As of 2 weeks ago )

She should be above her normal weight before fledgeing. Should be nice and fat on baby food. She will lose a bit when trying to fledge. BTW- did the breeder clip her? It is very bad for a bird both physically and mentally to not be allowed to fledge. She is already clipped so you should really let her wings grow in so that she at least has the opportunity to learn to fly. Just keep feeding her. Some macaws can take up to a year to fully wean though that's not average. So, if I wasn't clear, she should reach a weight above what her average will be before she fledges. She might go a little below her average when she's fledging and again when she is trying to wean but not a lot. A loss of 20 grams or more is cause for concern and a vet visit. Hope this helps.
