Budgie Eyes

Postby zazanomore » Tue Feb 01, 2011 8:53 pm

Something I've noticed with my budgies, is that they have completely different eyes. Bonnie has white around her eyes, while Clyde has the typical dark budgie eyes. I don't think there's anything wrong with Bonnie's eyes, as she looks in the mirror, and is always the most observant. When she gets excited by something new, you can tell by her pupils contracting. like:

Of course with Bonnie, it isn't as intense.

Anyways, I'm providing a picture of both Bonnie and Clyde, side to side, with both eyes in clear view.

I was wondering if their color mutations might have something to do with it. Clyde is a wild type, while Bonnie is a blue and white dominant pied.

If someone could provide me with an explanation, that would be great.

Iris rings are definitely connected to certain colour mutations, and are not an indicator of eye health, so no need to worry :)

That's good. I actually think they make her look smarter. Like how glasses make people look smarter :bluebudgie:

Don't all budgies have dark irises at birth, and eventually the colors would change to a lighter shade upon maturity?

Not all budgies are born with dark eyes. The ino's (albino and lutino) have red eyes, and some of the colour mutations are born with plum eyes...i believe its the plum eyed babies that end up with the light iris rings, but i'm not 100% sure. I'll check some of my books and get back to you :)

No iris ring around the eye means either the budgie is less than 12 to 18 months old in most cases. Only dark eyed cleared's or r. pieds (I believe... might be wrong on that one though) have no eye ring. Looks like Clyde isn't either so he's probably just young?
