Budgie toenails

Postby Anneke » Thu Feb 03, 2011 6:48 pm

Does anyone perhaps know of a stick or something that budgies can use to 'file' their toenails with? I would cut Lychee's nails myself, but she isn't quite tame enough ( We're working on it tho! :) ) This morning I caught her trying to scratch her nails against the cage bars.

Thanks!

There's pedi perches on the market for budgies. I've actually ordered one for the budgies and one for the cockatiel.

But you have to be careful which brand/type you get, as some can be more harmful. (So I've heard)

I don't know if you can source them in NZ, but I've given each of our cages a perch that has abrasive on the front and back but not on the top. The problem with sandpaper/pedi-perches in general is that they can abrade the foot as well as the nail, causing sore or even injured feet. The ones that are smooth on top, if they are sized so the end of the nail hits the abrasive part when the bird is perched seem like a good compromise.

Scotty has one made out of bamboo with sand applied to the sides and Scooter has one of these:

That's the same design, I think it may even be the same manufacturer!

Do you have any pet stores left? Maybe we should send you a care package!
