Blue headed pionus sneezes?

Postby coral » Thu Feb 10, 2011 5:01 pm

Marty was sick when i first got him with an upper respiratory infection and a bacterial infection. Both problems were resolved. Does it have something to do with the pine chips in the bottom of his cage? (the parrot shop around my house uses them and they said they were fine to use) Does anyone have any ideas? Should i take him back to the vet?

Thanks! :)

It could well be the pine chips. They sure make me sneeze. Just use newspaper.

The general wisdom is that a dry sneeze is usually just clearing something out of the nostrils, but if the sneeze is wet, it usually indicates disease. Can you call the vet that treated him initially and ask he or she if they think they should do a follow-up?

Also, are you sure this is actually sneezing and not just the pionus wheezing and snorting? all pi's when nervous upset or overexerted can make these sounds that range from heavy breathing to wheezing to sort of snorting. Is there any rhyme or reason to when it happens?
