hormonal?

Postby rebeccaturpeinen » Mon Feb 21, 2011 1:04 pm

Hi, my birth has been acting a bit different lately... he is screaming a lot more and is running back and forth and just seems more aggresive... doesnt want to do much training either. Could this be hormonal? We think he's a boy but aint sure and we have no idea how old he is but assume he is older than 2.

We havent changed anything in our routine and he gets out of cage time like before and we change his toys around every 2-3 weeks.

If this is hormonal, how long would this stage take? He is driving my husband nuts... I just ignore it but he is ready to throw Joey out... it would be nice to be able to tell him how long this will approximatly take.

I still love him though :D :D

It could be. I'm not sure at what age Rosellas reach sexual maturity. I'll let others weigh in who have more experience, but I think if that's what is going on, you should try to maintain his routine as much as possible. Both our birds are kind of around this age as well. My understanding is that the behaviors will be most noticeable in spring but once maturity is reached they don't go away completely (although behavior modification and training can always be used to work with troublesome behaviors). Some things I have heard can trigger or exacerbate "spring" behavior is too much full spectrum light, not enough dark/sleep time, overly abundant feeding (giving a sense of spring plenty), provision of a nestlike area, too much petting especially under wings and on back.
