Is she wheezing or just speaking softly?

Postby Marguerite » Tue Feb 22, 2011 10:02 am

My sengal has been making a funny noise lately and I'm a little worried about it. Mostly I can't tell if it is just her trying to make so soft a sound ti just comes out as breath or if it is a heavy breath similar to wheezing. In all other regards she is fine: talking and playing just as normal, which makes me feel like I am overreacting but I wanted to see what you all thought.

Thanks!!! :senegal:

Also: is it true I shouldn't be giving her peanuts?

Its hard for any of us to tell without being able to observe/hear the sound. If you are at all uncertain, take your Senegal to a certified avian vet. Birds hide illnesses very well and by the time they are showing symptoms it can be more serious.

And I wouldn't feed peanuts. I don't know all the technical medical terms, but there is something they could get from eating peanuts.

Peanut shells can be contaminated with aflatoxin from a fungus which grows on the shells, so in-shell peanuts (or peanuts which may have been contaminated during shelling) are questionable. Walnuts are also suspect.

Personally I'd probably schedule a vet visit and assume it's going to be the annual well-bird visit if nothing proves wrong. One thing you can do is watch her chest wall when she's making the sound and compare that to how her chest wall moves when she is vocalizing and breathing normally -- they don't have diaphragms so the chest wall movement should reflect how "hard" they are breathing.
