How im trying to get my bird to eat fresh

Postby idlepirate » Thu Mar 24, 2011 2:39 pm

This is kindof a reply to both "what do you feed your parrot every day" and to ninadivines's problem not knowing how to get their parrot to eat fruit and veg.

maybe this helps someone....
lorenzo is a fussy eater but will never resist grapes.... like zaza's birds he also eats alot of dried fruit. he doesnt touch fresh banana but quite enjoys dried banana. if i add new things or healthy greens in his bowl he doesnt go for them or chucks them out unless hes really hungry (see in the video....i think its very rude!after going through all the effort to prepare a full meal for him). only grapes!

however i found if i feed him new or healthy things in different places he'll take them.
for instance when hes on his bungie at the highest point in the room and i give him a tiny stick of brocoli from my hand, or a bean, carrot etc... he'll take it and nibble it but he wants to hold it, he doesnt want it in a bowl. he liturally chucks out the beans in the bowl but when i offer them to him on his bunjie he loves them. even though hell keep dropping them and u have to constantly give them back. i stick the beans and babycorn in some of his toys that are hanging as well and he likes to go and pull them out during the day, carry them to the top and eat them, loro also prefers crunchy vegies so i cant mash anything. my best bet is anything like tiny sticks of carrots or raw brocoli, parsnips...raw green beans. you need to find out what your bird prefers. even down to how they like their veggies cut (some prefer sticks, others cubes...) smaller birds might prefer grated veggies or mash...even everything blended up and mixed in with seeds.some prefer cooked veggies, others raw. try feeding your bird in different areas of the room to make it more interesting. this has worked great for me. some just like company and want you to liturally handfeed them every bite. Snap-peas in a pod are usually successful because the birds have fun opening them up and getting out the peas. lorenzo also really likes babycorn :). my neighbors bugie wont eat anything fresh but somehow likes babycorn too...he always goes for it. so even if you can find at least 1 or 2 fresh items your bird likes it's a start and work from there.

oh yea...try pomegrate, parrots really seem to love it once they get into it. loro can't get enough and its good for them.

emmm and thinking of any more tips i can give you. if you're training your birds you can sneak in bits of fruit or veggies as their treat, if they get it as a reward they might not notice what it is and just assume it must be great since its a training reward. i give lorenzo pellets this way and he doesnt refuse them because hes too excited knowing he got the trick right and that im proud of him:)

to all the fussy birds out there...dont give up! just try everything in different ways...different places.

Hi
Idlepirate, looks like you got a little "brat" on your hands. Video and music was awesome. He is like...get this stuff outta my grape bowl! If there are no grapes mixed-in, will he still toss out the veggies? Tambo :macaw: loves corn on the cob. I give him a chunk he can handle. He loves it and soon it's all over his face. Give him a chicken or turkey bone and he will never drop it until the insides are gone.

Love the video! He's foraging, the only problem is that it's veggies and not paper he's hunting around in!

You might try smaller pieces and actually putting the grapes on the top. Every once in a while, Scotty will give something else in the bowl a nibble, but he does much the same, and the easier it is to throw out, the more likely it will be thrown out. LOL!

the grapes vary, some days they're on top, others its all mixed in.
he somehow doesnt like it when i cut up the beans so i tend to stick them in his toys for him to pick out and then he takes them to the top of his bunji and eats them there:)
sometimes after putting them back in the bowl 50x after him dropping them out (or taking one bite and dropping them) he will take it and eat it from the bowl.
its funny though how they choose their favorite first and wont eat anything else until they finished all their favorites:)
id love him to forage more, maybe once his new cage arrives i can come up with something. everytime i tried (even for grapes;) ) he hasnt been too interested to bother.

he is completely! this little guy controls everything that happens in here.haha ill call it the grapebowl from now on i think. seriously its been so bad since i got back from holiday. hes never biten before and now hes full on attacking if he doesnt get what he wants and wont take no for an answer :(
i really hope the new cage is going to help. id hate him to change like this permenantly.
he wont usually toss out the veggies if theres no grapes, it depends whats in the bowl, this day i just had beans and the nectarine which were 'in the way' i guess hehehe. lorenzo tends to eat more fruit then greens, nothing veggie like i can put in his bowl with him actually eating it. then again i give him grapes everyday now since its a guarenteed thing he'll eat and if theres no grapes in the bowl hell just look at me like "oi you! where the hell are my grapes, how do you expect me to eat breakfast without my grapes!?"
