One of the reasons shellfish is bad for parrots is because they have a very high iodine content. Again, a bite of shrimp isn't going to kill your bird if he happens to grab it off your plate, but its not something that should be fed in any large amount.

When I was questioning fish, I meant more along the lines of white fish like talapia or flounder, stuff I eat on a regular basis. I tend to collect all my leftovers after meals and dole it out much to my birdies enjoyment and I would like to be able to include the fish. It IS a good source of clean protein and fish oils are good for feathers, I just don't know to what degree so I haven't, just on the off chance that its bad...

Then again I have always been warned about cheese and my birds LOVE cheese. Pickle, Bryans Hahn's LOVES soda and will practically dive into your glass to get some. We don't allow him to have it, but he does sneak sips of his own and at 16 yrs old, I don't see that's its done him any harm considering he's been doing it since he was a baby. Like most things, its all about volume. Certainly there are foods that birds should never eat, like avocado and fruit pits that contain cyanide. That goes without saying. But denying them a tiny treat of a "not so good" food is mean. Kind of like humans and cheesecake. I love it, but I'm not going to eat a whole one in one sitting, it would give me a heart attack! But I'm not never going to eat it knowing it might.

My Hahns has most of the same food the family eats which includes fish-salmon. He eats chicken from time to time and has had steak too. All in very small amounts. I give him fruit/veggie juice from time to time. I think we go overboard on some things with the birds. We need to trust our common sense.....He loves home made oatmeal cookies too....And I would think that most of these birds in the wild would eat fish, think about the rivers, lakes oceans they live by, and I am pretty sure the fish is not the freshest thing they would eat....

I mainly wouldn't give a bird fish because I don't eat it and there's no reason for me to buy it for them if I'm not going to have any. That stuff is insanely expensive.

Cheney Bird has some things occasionally that aren't so great for him, but in small quantities I'm not entirely worried. He's had "juice" that is only really 5% juice. He's had pizza crust. He's had some sweetend blue berry oatmeal. The only thing I will keep hidden from them are the really big no-no's like avocado and chocolate, two things that I absolutely love.

Yeah, do as I say not as I do - most of my parrots love a sip of coffee w/ milk & sugar once in a blue moon.

My birds eat lots of fish. and they love it.The biggest problem with shellfish is the bateria and most shellfish is barely cooked. My amazon love crab legs but they only get them cooked fresh. Jake has been eatong seafood for forty years and is still with us.

My dad makes swordfish steaks w/ a black bean sauce. If you weren't told it was swordfish, you'd probably not know it was fish. Very firm flesh, no fishy smell or taste, just total yumminess.

I'm totally with you on this, Jessie. The smell of fish disgusts me and most of the fish I've had, I've hated. The only fish I'll sometimes eat is either flounder or haddock, which even I can tolerate because they don't taste fishy or smell funky. I also eat crab cakes and shrimp, but I'm allergic to shellfish so I don't have them often. But fish like tuna, catfish or salmon just smell and taste too ocean-y for me.

Overall, if I don't buy it for me, the birds don't get it either.
