Conure with bacterial gut infection - treatment concerns

Postby anna83 » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:00 pm

A few weeks ago I noticed that my Green Cheek Conure's droppings had become watery. I made an appointment at the vet (unfortunately there are no Avian vets in our area, only 1 who sees alot of birds) and he diagnosed her with a bacterial gut infection. He said she would have to stay at the clinic for around 5 days for treatment (would need antibiotics and then have to eat poo from a healthy bird to recolonise the gut?). After 7 days of not hearing anything, I asked if I could take her home. When I collected her, the vet said the treatment had not gone as well as planned and that she would still need injections. Since the start of treatment it has been 11 days, over $300 and her droppings are still very watery.

Is this normal?
Has anyone had a conure with a similar condition?

At this stage Im getting really worried about her, and feel that maybe she is not receiving adequate treatment.

I haven't had this experience, but I think I'd be feeling a little antsy, too, if I didn't have confidence in my vet. It doesn't sound as if you do. Is there an avian vet within driving distance you could consult for a second opinion?

Just spoke to some local breeders who have recommended a different bird vet. We have an appointment tonight for a 2nd opinion. Fingers crossed!

Definetly think something's not right.

Sully's had more bacterial or yeast issues than I can count and the standard treatment was sending me home with 14 days or so of twice daily meds and a container of pro-biotics to be fed to him on wet food/mash/sprouts once a day for the course of the treatment and maybe up to two weeks after.

Not only that but the test and meds only come to about $55 CDN.

I would *definetly* find an avian vet and consult. Not only that...but I've *never* heard of feeding an animal another supposedly 'healthy' animal's poop....if anything consuming droppings even if the 'donor' bird is healthy would just create more issues.

You're getting screwed and your little guy isnt getting what he needs. Definetly get another opinion.
