Yuck, yuck, yuck. To the excrement, insect larvae, and the fish heads.

Yuck. But it used to be much worse, at least this document discusses regulation of the yuck. We have a literature thread going in another forum -- Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" anyone? At least now this kind of contamination is limited, although stricter standards wouldn't hurt. There's bad stuff and then bad stuff. I don't mind too much if my organically grown celery has dirt with a bit of manure on it. OTOH, I really wish we could clean up the poultry industry, there is no reason food should have to be treated like toxic waste. But at least we no longer have to worry that our ground meat routinely has bits of processing line worker in it.

Roly poly fish heads! Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up, yum!

It still amazes me how few regulations there were regarding food safety back then. What passed through food processing plants back then makes a few bugs, mold, rot, and manure seem like nothing.

Honestly, I'm more worried about things like E. Coli and Salmonella outbreaks that have been common lately than I am about a bit of mold or some dirt and manure. How many times has something like spinach or peanut butter been recalled recently? I'm a bit squeemish about bugs though, so I'd rather not think about those.

We learned about that in school. And you know what? It doesn't really bother me. At least mold, insects and manure are all organic and natural.

The processed and genetically modified foods are what scares and grosses me out.

When I'm older, I plan on raising my own meat, eggs, vegetables and fruits. Organic and natural. Plus, food tastes better without all those added chemicals.

Just expressing that we can't keep our darling fids in a bubble much as we would like to.

And the hepatitis outbreaks in restaurants! I just don't even want to think about it. One guy not washing his hands after using the bathroom is not going to get hundreds of people sick. . . but one pissed off guy with a sick mind . . .

Zaza - That was awesome!!

In the U.S. our farmers export produce to other countries while our grocery stores stock imported produce from other countries. Say WUT?! :?

I was watching a documentary that explained that this was actually a result of practices common in the 1800s. For instance, they were saying that Americans grow something here, ship it to another country to be processed, cleaned, packaged, or whatever else, and that country ships it back to us. The example the documentary used was actually apples, but Americans still do something very similar with grains.
