If they're vacuum packed then it wouldn't matter, they need the air as well to germinate (I think). What do you do with the seeds once they're out of the pack?

I wonder how they vacuum pack seeds without sucking all the seeds up???

I've been putting them in tupperware containers with a pellet, oatmeal, rice mixture. I find it easier to open one of the vacuum packs, mix it in the ratio I've been using, and storing it for daily use. I've never had a problem with it yet, but I never really thought about germination, either.

And vacuum packing. You can get one of the home vacuum pack machines so you can do it yourself. I'm assuming the process is somewhat similar to the ones I've used before. Basically it clamps down on the plastic before sucking the air out so nothing can get through. The space is so tiny even a seed can't get through. Then they just seal it together.

I try not to have more than 5lb on hand at a time, and in this dry environment, keeping them in a sealed plastic container seems to work pretty well. Our freezer is quite full of people food and the absence of a separate storage freezer, I'd rather pay a little more per pound for a smaller quantity and not have to freeze the dry diets.

I think my mum would have a fit if she found bird feed in the freezer

I live by myself, so it doesn't really matter. My boyfriend actually suggested I buy it in bulk because I'm on a tight budget and instead of getting rid of the birds, I save a good amount of money buying it this way.

I've always wondered what people would think if they came in my apartment and wanted to grab something out of my refrigerator though. Right now, most of it's completely full with bird food that I've only partially sorted. Most of it's going to stay in the refrigerator because my freezer is pretty full. But I have more bird food in my house than I have people food! :D
