first aid kits

Postby Giantmoa » Fri May 06, 2011 7:58 pm

how many of you guys have first aid kits for your birds and what do you have in them? I'm trying to get together a list. and how necessary do you think having a first aid kit is? So far I haven't had any minor/major injuries but I figure it's better to be prepared than not

I don't have a first aid KIT per se, but I do keep styptic powder near the cages and I know where I can get hold of my needle-nose pliers in a hurry. The rest of the stuff is in the bathroom just across the hall. And now we have some Slivadene to add to the stash.

I think the styptic powder and pliers are the only bird-specific items and our human first aid supply is decent (guaze, tape, tweezers...)

I'm curious what others are doing, though.

I don't need one because I have a vet 3 blocks away.

EDIT: I googled and figured I will get one this weekend.

I don't have one, but I feel like I should. I don't even really have human first aid supplies apart from a few bandaids (for Cheney Bird bites!) and neosporin. I don't even know where to start with one and I'd probably have better luck getting one if somewhere sold them premade.

http://www.bailey-foundation.org/howto/ ... st-aid-kit
That link is to the rescue I adopted Cheney Bird from. They have a great article with suggestions for what to put in an avian first aid kid. I'm going to put mine together as I get the pieces needed. Right now, I'm mostly concerned with emergency kits and plans for my birds due to all the crazy weather the Mid-West and Northeast U.S. has had lately.

I think to start, I'll be getting the following items:
Small towels
Pedialite
Baby Food
Pellets, Seed
Tweezers
Cotton Balls
Q-Tips
Popcicle Sticks
Scissors
Qwik-Stop

Eventually, I'd like to add the rest of the suggested supplies from that link. My birds aren't particularly accident prone and they've never been cut or otherwise injured, but it's always a possibility something could happen.

this is a really good question and will definitly be following this thread. I have a first aid kit for ourselves and our dogs so I should make one ready for our bird too.

I found a couple ready made online in the U.S., but since you're in Denmark, I don't know if they're available there. I've been trying to price stuff to make one for a while, and the ready made ones seem a lot cheaper.

One thing I hadn't thought about because we're not out and about with the birds so much is that it is probably even more important to have a portable first aid kit that you can grab and take with you.

Does styptic powder degrade in heat? I'm thinking of putting some in my car just in case something happens in transit. We already have a human first aid kit in the car.

Also, I know you can do CPR and rescue breathing on cats and dogs... is this something that can be learned for birds? Red cross will actually do the cat/dog training as well as the people training.

Not sure which article explains it best, but that's what google turned up.

I couldn't name a first aid kit what I have, but I keep couple of things.
Most of them are after my bunny: nail clipper, scissors, syringes after we feed baby raccoon and after vets give as meds for Mango- to be specific not-used syringes.
From the time I over-clipped Mango's beak I always keep flour close in case.
