No Name - Broken Foot?

No Name has a vet appointment this morning. I usually open the cage for them to hang out and play together, and today No Name somehow got his foot caught in the feeder dish door between the metal of the door and the water dish. After carefully removing his leg from the situation he got it in, I thought he was fine. He was using it to walk across the cage top. But after about 20 minutes of observation, it appears he is in a lot of pain. So I called the vet to see if they could get him in.

Have any of you ever had experience with a bird with a broken foot or leg? What is the usual care for something like this? Is it probable he'll have full function of his foot?

I feel awful about this. I don't even know how it happened or how he managed to get his foot caught in the door like that. He seems to be fine right now, other than having his poor little foot curled up in his feathers.

Yeah, I do. Currently have two handicapped finches w/ broken legs and dislocated hips. The finches are permanently disabled.

No Name's foot might not be broken since he was using it "fine" and then didn't. Maybe just swelling from getting pinched. This happened to a baby ringneck about two weeks ago. Actually, I don't know how the ringneck hurt his foot/leg. Went to morning feed and he wasn't putting any weight on it. I checked his hip, down the leg, and checked to see the mobility of the toes. Nothing seemed broken so I put him in a little hospital cage to reduce movement. He recovered in about four days and is monkeying around today like everyone else.

I had a conure that got a broken leg from a nestbox malfunction. Vet splinted it and the bird recovered w/ full use of the leg. If No Name's foot's really broken they might splint it. It really doesn't sound like too bad of an injury.

Don't feel bad. Spit happens. Freak accidents happen. Sucks, but they do. A little pain's not a bad thing. Keeps them from moving around so they can heal.

I'm starting to think he's fine since he's putting weight on it now, but I want a vet to look just in case. We're going to do his well bird visit at the same time and just get it out of the way.

He seems okay now. In flying away from me, he was using his feet to land on the cage. It didn't seem as if he was in pain, but the foot is a little discolored.

Just got back from the vet, and No Name is okay. She didn't do x-rays because he was walking on both legs, though he did seem to favor the right leg. She did say his leg is pretty bruised and a little swollen, so she said it's not surprising that he's favoring one side over the hurt leg. He doesn't have any medication or antibiotics, but we did cut his band off as I think that's what ultimately made his leg get stuck.

Poor No Name... Don't worry, budgies heal fast. Sometimes I think, because they can't stay still in one place, they have to heal fast to be able to get crazy again fast

He seems to be in pain and still is a little swollen, but he's walking on the leg so I'm assuming it's not too big of an issue. After I got him home and opened his carrier, he flew out pretty fast and was flying all over all afternoon. $70.48 later and I know for sure he should be okay, though my boyfriend was none to pleased when I told him I took the bird to the vet. I'd sell a kidney if I needed to so my birds could see the vet in an emergency.

Poor little guy wasn't happy at the vet. He flew all over the room, but the vet tech and the vet. Both suggested I have his wings clipped, but that's just not for us. We did trim his nails and remove his leg band, though. And we did the full well bird visit as well, though we didn't do stool samples or blood work this time, both of which the vet tech and vet advised against at this time.

Young fella and been in your good care , i don't think he needs a bunch of high dollar test either.Glad to take your boy friend crabbing with us but he might come home alittle crabby.

When I got Cheney Bird from the rescue, I asked their vet to do stool samples for all three which they did. I'm pretty certain that they don't have anything now, but I will do stool samples for Pigpen and Cheney Bird when they have their well bird visits.
