Feeding Eggs

Postby Michael » Mon May 16, 2011 1:23 pm

Do you feed eggs to your parrot? In what form? If you don't, is there a moral objection of some kind or does it have to do with nutrition?

Normally I feed hardboiled eggs with the shell. I cut the eggs in eighths and just put it in their dish. Occasionally they get scrambled eggs, but that's rare because I use butter and milk to make my scrambled eggs and I don't want them to have either of those. When they do get scrambled eggs, I usually microwave one egg in a dish with some water and give it to them when it cools.

I don't know why there would be a moral objection unless you view it as some form of cannibalism. Aside from eggs, my birds eat roasted or boiled chicken and love it. I've owned chickens before that would eat chicken.. and that I found a bit odd.

I don't eat eggs directly so when I'm making them for my birds, it's specifically for them. But even if otherwise, I still prefer to make the scrambled eggs specially for them because I crush egg shell and mix into it for extra calcium. I mix it so they can't choose between the yoke and white, but I'm curious which parrots prefer if given the opportunity to eat either?

Yes, I do. Primarily in the form of egg food, but I've also fed a lot of scrambled eggs. Easy high protein source. Complete myth that feeding egg causes breeders to destroy and eat their own eggs.

I've owned chickens before that would eat chicken.. and that I found a bit odd.

Chickens are freakin' vicious! They'll chase down mice, peck them to death and eat them.

Here's a story that'll make your eyes pop otta your head - A few years back I went into one of my enclosures where I had a small flock of banti chickens. I saw a HAWK hunched down behind one of my feeding bins. I thought to myself - I'm going to get the crap beat out of me by that hawk. I carefully went to go grab it. IT WAS DEAD!!! The chickens had PECKED IT TO DEATH!! Upon inspection of the carcass it was obviously a juvenile. Probably thought it was going to get an easy meal.

We used to feed scrambled eggs to my YN Amazon all the time simply because he loved them, but don't plan on feeding it to my eclectus when he comes home. Because of the ekki's sensitive digestion, I'd be worried about giving him that much protein in one shot, especially since it's not really a dietary staple for regular birds who have a good diet. I plan on using sprouts and beans for his protein. For other birds, though, I don't see a problem with it - it was like Christmas for my Amazon whenever we made them for him.

I can understand people being freaked out by having a bird that eats eggs, same as I heard someone who hated that her family would sneak the bird pieces of chicken. I don't have that sort of problem with it, though... that is if I don't think about it too hard :P

UGH! I know!! My family has chickens and normally only get hens, but we've gotten a few roosters on accident and we've had to kill them because they were so aggressive. They'd go right through a pair of jeans with their spurs if you weren't paying attention!

They chase down people, too! I refuse to ever be around another chicken again in my life. Awful, horrible, mean things. My boyfriend's mom has a bunch of them for the eggs. I don't know how well I'll do going to her house.

My cockatiels always went to town on hardboiled eggs(cut up into 16ths with egg shell crushed on top) when I gave it to them. We couldn't boil eggs in the house without giving them some, on the next floor up and halfway across the house they knew when we had some cooking and started screaming for it.

I've actually been advised by the vet to start feeding jack egg....think she said egg Yolk??

Whats best? The white or the yolk? Or can you feed all of it? And how much/how often?

And when you crush the shell...how much can you give them, without risking an overdose?
Wild animals are called 'wild' for a reason. Keep them that way. Adopt your pets, or buy them from a certified breeder.

I feed my Green Cheek about an eighth of a hardboiled egg with the shell on. I just cut the egg in half across the middle and then in quarters lengthwise. I give this to him maybe three or four times a month. And it just so happens his favorite part is the yolk.
