Kaylayluh pretty much answered it. I thought I'd mention it since some people are neat freaks (nothing wrong with that!!!) and might be washing their eggs before putting them in the fridge. My sister in law used to do that thinking she was doing what was best to avoid bugs. There are ways to safely wash and disinfect eggs, but not by just washing them in the sink. And it does no good for store bought eggs anyway. I bring my fresh eggs into the house daily and don't wash them. The shells sometimes have some dirt and a little bit of poo on them. Completely safe like that. If they're super dirty, I feed them to the dogs.

If, for some reason, people absolutely do feel like they have to wash their eggs, I suggest you treat them like mushrooms. You wouldn't (or, you shouldn't) put a mushroom in water. Instead, you dampen a paper towel and wipe it off.
