URGENT: Amy hasn't eaten for two days!

Postby Ilovebirds » Tue May 24, 2011 9:27 pm

I'm not sure if CAPS are allowed but it s urgent, my Parrotlet Amy hasn't eaten for two days. She has three different things she can choose from and three different snacks (never at once) but she hasn't eaten any thing at all. Even when I have her in hand she does not eat.

Her feces are are runny but dry within minutes.

What should I do?

The last time she did this I bought her spray millet. It does not seem to be working.

:(

I really don't need another piece of my heart broken.

First I had to give my sun conure and Jenday away last week to my uncle because he asked my dad for them and then my chickens on Thursday. I really don't need anything to happen to Amy.

Yes, she really needs to go to a vet. Good luck.

If in doubt, always get them checked by an avian vet. There's so many things that can make a bird sick, it's always best to get them checked out and get tests done to identify what the problem is and get on the right treatment plan. It may cost more than self-diagnosing and self-medicating (never use otc antibiotics sold in pet stores) but your bird's health is always worth it. And so is the peace of mind!

I'll pile on the vet suggestion. If she's also not drinking, it could be very serious. Has anything changed (new lot of food, for example?)

The short answer of course is vet as everyone is saying. If you're not sure, go to the vet.

However, if you haven't made it yet, waiting to go, etc let's consider what is going on.

A) How do you know the bird isn't eating? Are you sure it's not just because you aren't there to see it eat because it's shy? Or perhaps you put so much food in the bowl that it looks like it wasn't eaten because the amount it eats is so little that no difference is noticeable.

B) Any major changes or stresses in the environment or diet lately? Sometimes moving the cage or changing the kind of food can cause a bird to starve itself a few days.

C) Try giving soft mushy foods in the meantime such as oatmeal (warm but not burning hot), mashed potatoes, baby food. Also make sure foods the bird is familiar with are available. Give favorite treats too (maybe sunflower seeds) and see if it will eat those. If it is refusing even treats, things are pretty bad and vet care is urgently needed.

Don't forget that a bird not eating could be many different things. It could be stress, illness, injury, food poisoning, bad food, etc. They kind of respond with the same symptoms for anything out of the norm so vet treatment is really important.

Hey guys, she started eating and it turned out it was just that she was shy because of her new bird bunker.
