Cockatoo with broken foot

Postby sharcm1 » Wed Jun 01, 2011 8:38 pm

Recently my cockatoo broke her foot. The vet put her in a cast. The cast lasted for 4 days until she ripped it off. I had to take her back to the vet and they replaced the cast and put a cone on her so she couldn't get to her foot. She also can't climb or walk that well. I know she will get used to it but her inability to climb and move makes we worried about putting her on a perch or in her cage. She is also trying to rip off the cone and she will probably succeed at this.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to do to keep her from destroying the cone and then her cast again. :cockatoo:

I suggest finding a large cat carrier (or dog carrier depending on size). If a perch doesn't fit tightly through the natural vents, cutting a small hole on each side, and fitting it to a perch will work. If you don't have dishes that will hang in the door you can buy them for just a couple dollars in most pet shops.. towel the bottom so your bird has a soft place to rest besides the perch.

The carrier will be darker and keep your bird calmer while he heals.

I did this with my Willow when he broke his toe and it worked wonders.
