Bath time

Postby kahawia » Fri Jun 10, 2011 12:24 am

My Caique doesn't enjoy baths. She has only enjoyed and willingly took two baths. It was so adorable to watch! I have tried everything and I would really like her to enjoy daily bath time. I just give her a daily mist, which she hates. She just does her high pitched piggie squeal through the whole thing. I've tried putting oranges and such in the water but she picked them out without going in.. Anyone else have this problem? Waaaah I don't want a dirty bird!

My cockatiel hates all things water. I've tried misting, but he can't stand it. He's always preening himself, so I guess it's really not a problem.

Just how some birds are I guess. My Senegal hates showers or baths but my Cape Parrot loves them. Different birds I guess.

Michael,

Our Senegal hates baths too. She has taken a few herself in her water bowl but thats it. Our New baby Cape Apollo was taking baths in his water bowl the day after we got him. HE LOVES WATER. He is almost 13 weeks old today.

I alternate and take Rambo in the shower with me one day and Myrtle another day. I have a parrot perch that sticks to the wall in a walk in shower. I have it situated so only half the perch gets showered.

Rambo does everything but sing in the shower. He lifts one wing and then the other. The funny part is when he turns around and lifts his feathers to wash his butt.

Myrtle must never have had a shower before. She just steps into the spray. When she finishes drinking all she can she just lets it spray on her back and head.

My sun conure adored baths and water. She loved to run around the bottom of the shower in the "rainstorm" after I was done washing (and making sure all the soap was rinsed away). My senegal seems to not like to take baths, though. He's dunked his head in his water dish a few times on his own and he seems to like to (or at least not seem averse to) sit on the shower perch in the steam while I shower, but any time I've presented him with water to get into, he wants nothing to do with it. Won't even goof with it enough to retrieve a super-favorite piece of food from the center of a shallow dish of water.

I chalk it up to different birds. I miss watching my sun run around in showers, sinks, pie dishes and pans of water, flipping the water all over the place and living it up.

My critters are little people of different ages. Each kid has a different personality and different likes and dislikes. I have to remember which kid likes what in food and care. Even loving is different. Myrtle is kissy and mouthy with baby talk like a 2 year old kid. Rambo is indignant when she is noisy and tells her to "shut up, do you have a problem".

We are down to 29 now. I had to have Lucy, my chihuahua, put to sleep. She had an untreatable heart condition that made her bloat. Her quality of life had come to an end and I just couldn't be selfish and let her suffer. Rambo is in trouble - check out Health & Nutrition.

My Skittles :senegal: hates the spritzer the most...even if he sees it he freaks out. So i got him into the shower. I took the cage appart and put him into the shower along with the top part so he feels secure enough and doesnt fly around and hurt himself. i keep the water on low presure and low temp. he doesnt like it but once hes wet he sits there and takes it. I feel so guilty but he looks awful the day after his shower...so needs it. i think with time hel get used to it.
I also got a second, smaller spritzer bottle which makes less noise. I used it for my first time yesterday. But for a week before u used it i kept it close to his cage so he got used to it and and even played with it myself and let him lick the cover when he was curious. so he was scared when he saw me take it out in the shower. i had also sprayed it around the room playfully so he was used to it. once he was wet from the shower i sprayed him with it (it has special birdie conditioner in it) and he didnt hate it. Which was progress for me.
I also found letting him watch me clean out his cage using the shower helped as he watched and would see it was harmless. Im not sure hel ever enjoy water, he rarely even drinks it...which im a little worried about, but thats another story. My aim is to hopefully get to a stage where he accepts it as part of his life. After all i hated baths as a kid too...
When i saw how afraid of water he was o googled it and google said bring him into the shower room and let him watch u in the shower. and mayb when u wash the dishes or other things. Youl have o seem happy and chat to him the whole way through so hel see it as a fun thing...eventually...it takes patients. But also if hes scretching u need to find another way to clean him as his fear cud wreck ur relationship, if not, it will wreck any chance of him/her enjoying a bath/shower coz hel always remember the previous experiences. Try keep the atmosphere calm and happy

Take him into the shower with you. He won't take up much room. If you don't have a shower perch just put him behind you so he gets some water to play in without it coming down directly on his head. That's what I did before the perch.
