Driving with my GCC

Postby amusg12 » Fri Jun 10, 2011 12:25 am

Howdy! I'm new to this forum as well as bird ownership, I just got my little GCC a few weeks ago and I love him so much! In about two weeks I'm going to be making an eight hour drive to see my family and I want to take Lenny with me but I'm worried the drive there and back along with being in a strange place with a lot of strange people will be too stressful for him, he's only a few months old. Am I just being too paranoid or is this a legitmate concern? Thanks y'all!

As long as you have a travel carrier with a perch and small toy in it and provide lots of food and water (or a small amount of water and lots of veggies/fruit with high water content) he should be fine. Make sure the carrier isn't anywhere where it will be getting a draft from your air conditioning or anything. And never leave a bird in a car unattended just like you wouldn't leave a dog in a hot car.

If you're going to be travelling to see your family in the future it would be best for him to get used to it now while he's young. It's easier to get young birds to adjust to new surroundings. If you get him used to it now he should have no problem travelling when he's older because he'll be used to it. And the socialization would be good for him!

Michael has a few posts on here regarding travelling with birds. Try searching for travel and you should be able to find them.

Just keep in mind he'll probably starve himself for the entire time.

You might want to start taking him on shorter trips before the longer one, so you can see how he does with it. Having a towel to cover the carrier might be helpful if he does get freaked out, it may help calm him down. Just make sure it doesn't get too stuffy or hot under it. I'd only use it for a short period at a time.

With any creature travelling I like to stop and offer water every couple of hours.

Put his carrier where he can see you and talk to him on the way. He will bond much closer to you because of the trip.
