Urgent, Coughing Parrot

Postby viki » Mon Jun 20, 2011 4:39 pm

I feel like i might be asking too many questions all the time. But im worried about my baby and new at this so need all the help i can get. I just heard my sene coughing. Not like an imitated one, it didnt sound human, and wev never made such a noise around him. This was my first time hearing it from him. I couldnt descibribe to u what it sounded like because iv never heard a sound like it before.
Is this serious? Should i rush to the vet or wait until I hear it again? Is there anything i can do to help before rushing to the vet?

I think I'd take him to the vet. Birds can cough, and respiratory distress in birds is often serious. OTOH, it could be an imitative sound or regurgitation... things you can consider in addition to the sound are activity level, are the nares clear or clogged, is he eating OK, does his poop look normal, is he quiet with feathers fluffed up? But I have the impression you haven't had him for very long and that he hasn't had a vet workup in quite some time, so I would personally go ahead and get him to the vet for the peace of mind of having had him examined.

Where are you located viki? Maybe someone on this board can help you find an avian vet close to where you live.

One resource for finding avian vets is this website: http://www.aav.org/

You've mentioned coughing, sticking the foot down the throat and other concerns... plus the person you got him from sounded really odd -- IMO it's adding up to something definitely worth checking out.

It doesnt work for me, I tried, Because im in Ireland. Thanks for the help though. Ill search more on the net tonight...I found one on google in the town close to me but when i emailed them for a quote they didnt reply...to me thats a ad sign ut mayb im looking too much into it. Im really worried after i came home today, every day i keep seeing blood on his feet around his mouth or on his perch. Everytime I ask, im always told o its just a blood feather thats normal. But today i thought his bottom beak looked a little shorter and he seemed to ind it difficult to break a seed...I hope hes not self mutilating...hes alone from half 2 until 8 but today, i had to stay at work for longer at the last minute...
