Everyone has their own way of doing things. I feed my birds 2-3 meals a day with access to pellets in the cage. About 25% of their diet should be veggies and some fruits, and the rest be a mix of pellets, seeds, whole grains, pasta, etc.

and I feed my bird, mix of pasta, rice veggie and fruit, plus Abba green mixed with pellets and boiled water for a mash, and I hide seeds in foraging cups, plus fresh water and sometimes a skewer of fresh veggies etc. I give it all in the morning because of schedules. I also use safflower seeds to train at night.

I also let the bird eat dinner with us. Which is usually rice, chicken or fish and broccoli.....

the dietry needs on my bird is a bit different as he is a nectar feeder, he gets warm wetmix with a bit of honey and 3 raisins in the morning, in the afternoon i give him either highbiscus flowers dandilions or bottlebrushes and for dinner get get some grapes and another type of fruit or mixed veges,

my budgie gets his seedmix and hes great at eating leafy greens so i clip some thistle or silverbeat to the side of his cage in the afternnon

I don't have a set schedule. I usually give them a big meal for breakfast in the morning and a skewer. Mostly vegetables and some grains or beans. The skewers are always chunks of vegetables and fruit. Sometimes the meals in their bowls are cooked (quinoa, beans) and sometimes just cut up raw veggies. They have little foraging boxes I fill with pellets. Later meals are smaller and I try to make sure they are different from the meal before. They also get snacks later on in the day when they are out and about.

I give my birds a "people" food meal once a day. Grains, pasta, veggies, fruits, birdy bread, various noms. The rest of their day pellets mixed with a seed mix I get online. It makes for a nicely rounded, varied, healthy diet.

If I were home all day (stay at home, or work from home) I am sure I would probably do two people food meals a day. The people food meal is mostly for variation and lifestyle since pellets and a healthy seed mix technically meets their nutritional needs.

I'm a vegan with a mostly macrobiotic diet, so my bird and I share pretty much all the same meals. Well, I don't eat her pellets :? . But anyhow, I leave pellets in her cage at all times. In the morning she gets some apple or banana and some oatmeal (which she's not too crazy about), she gets a selection of whatever I'm eating for lunch and dinner (heavy on the veggies, before I add salt or too much oil), and then a couple nuts for snacks whenever I remember to give them to her. I don't always keep to a set schedule though, since I tend to eat throughout the day at random times and my bird is happy to eat whenever. I've learned that if I don't put her absolute favorite foods (NUTS! PASTA!) in her bowl with everything else, she's better about eating up her veggies but also not stuffing her face once she's had enough. If I put nuts or pasta in with everything else, she picks them out and then screams for more, ignoring the healthier food still sitting in the bowl.

It's funny you mention that you guys eat very similar food! My family/friends/stinky boyfriend are always telling me I would be sooo much healthier if I ate the same food my pets do! My brother was over last night and said he would love to eat the same meals my birds do. We were arguing over broccoli because he prefers regular (American? not sure where it came from...) broccoli while I prefer Chinese broccoli, which is why I bought a big head of broccoli just for the birds. We were doing a little price comparison because he eats tons of steamed broccoli (the very idea makes me shudder, I actually despise the smell of broccoli, especially steamed broccoli) and he was trying to convince me to eat more like the birds. Also trying to convince me he is a bird that needs to be fed!

ditto w/my bird. :)

There's a really good article about this on Pamela Clark's website.

Don't let the title fool you. Even if you're not experiencing behavior problems, it's got some great info about feeding times & meals.
