Not sure where to ask this.... Fruit flies!!!

Postby Morgiana » Tue Jul 12, 2011 4:49 pm

It's been very warm here and Bijou and I have been spending most of our time out on the shady deck instead of in the broiling house. Since he was barely in his cage much at all to make a mess, I didn't bother to change the paper for a couple days. BZZT!! Wrong answer!! Big, big, big, HUGE mistake. My slip in judgement has now given me a house full of fruit flies. LOTS of them.

Can anyone give me advice on eliminating these pests? My husband found some flypaper at a local grocery that we're going to put by the trash can and the bamboos (why they seem to like the bamboos, no idea) and I've scrubbed every bit of both Bijou's food and my own out of every corner of anything that a fly might find... Anyone have any additional things I should do to rid myself of them? I've only had to deal once with fruit flies with my sun conure, but that time I was in an apartment and I solved the problem by moving.

Morgiana and Bijou, good bird! :senegal:

Drs Foster and Smith have a sex lure. It lures them in a trap with sticky paper in it. I have used fly paper in a pinch. Because the little traps are so expensive, I just ordered the lures themselves and stuck them on fly paper. Hang it from a light and turn off all other lights. When the bugs are attracted to the light they have to land some where.

Those nasty things come in on the bird seed. Now I put the bags of seed in the freezer for a couple of days before I feed it. Just making sure that they are dead if they are there.

If you don't kill them out, you will get all the little wormie things crawling around. I also keep all my starching foods like flour, cereal, rice and grits in glass jars with sealed lids or they will get in there too.

Buy a chameleon, they love those!
well, i heard that not feeding your birds fruit will eliminate the source of food, and they will gradually move on out! Just make sure that they don't get into the garbage and breed there! I had a problem with that and made an invasion in my garage, but i won the battle happily! Fly swatters work well, go on a maniac murder spree! it may sound funny, but it works in my house!

Fruit draws knats. Mealy food has moths.

Fruit flies are a PAIN in the ass... harmless but so annoying!

What I've done in the past is:

Vacuum! Fruit flies tend to be where ever the main attraction is. They're tiny and fly so slowly... so creating a viscous black-hole will definitely take care of the visible ones.

Grab a bowl, a piece of fruit (preferably rotten) and place it in your bowl while covering with plastic wrap. Poke tiny holes in the wrap with a toothpick, fork etc. The flies will be drawn to the scent of the rotten fruit and venture through the holes. They cannot escape. Release them outside when you've caught a decent number.

These methods should definitely help :)

Cheers,
Bo

Why would you release them. Shake the bottle and drown them.

6 / one-half-dozen or the other.

Either way, they're no longer disturbing the peace!
