My Baby

Postby parrotlover » Fri Jul 29, 2011 9:37 pm

Hey my baby Cockatiel looks like it puffs its feathers out when it sleeps is that normal? Any other tie when he isn't sleeping he looks fine. I'm just makeing sure he is OK because I don't want to have to bring him to the vet already. Also is it OK that I already start bringing him to different parts of the house? I brought him to my room, the kitchen, and the living room. He seemed fine though. Also I made him a little perch that he can sit on or sleep on when ever I want him out. I used a soft cupid arrow that has a metal in the inside that is bedibal and flexibal. I wrapped the ends to my lamp to my shelf. I would love any comments or issues that you may find. Also don't forget to tell me if he 's OK with his feathers at night being a bit puffed out. I'm thinking maybe he's trying to get a bit warmer... :?

try to leave him in one area in a quiet place for a couple of days to let him get used to his new surroundings then start moving him around. he may be a little cold, cover his cage with a blanket at night or turn a heater on

Chevy is a cool name, go for it.

Puffing up is fine, Rory and Bailey both do it.

I agree, cover him up at night for a while. I no longer cover Rory (tiel) or Bailey (gcc) cos they get very upset and vocal if I do but I do cover the budgies cos its the only way they will be quiet at night.
The reason he is not flying around his cage is cos he probably doesnt know how, he is still a baby. I know when I first got Rory, he stayed in the same spot in his cage unless I moved him, so I had to put extra perches in his cage, especially along the side where his food and water where, till he learnt to climb and fly/jump around the cage. He also fell off his perches to start with, dont think he knew or had been exposed to perches, he was hand raised, so I had to put some old material on bottom of cage to buffer his falls. I have a cage similar to yours, quite tall, long fall for a little birdy, didnt want him to hurt himself or damage a blood feather.

Cover him all over, so he won't get a draft, except for a peep hole where he can look out and see you.

They puff up to keep warm.

He should probably be okay anywhere in the house as long as he is with you.

Start him early on soft fruit and veggies. Remember he won't eat much with a tiny little stomach.

Don't worry about him puffing up at night, my tiel does it too. It's just to keep warm.
