HELP! My palm cockatoo doesn't want to eat

Postby reinhardtyang » Sat Jul 30, 2011 2:10 am

Hi, Parrot experts,
Please kindly help me. My palm cockatoo doesn't want to eat food.
I have just bought a palm cockatoo. He is not a wild one. About 3 years old.

I tried to feed him with nuts, sunflower seeds, apple. But he seems doesn't fit the new home. He just ate just a little seeds, about 20 per day. This diet seems too little for him.

I am very worry about his health.

Is there any experts can help me?

You should contact whoever you got the cockatoo from and find out what it was accustomed to eating before and if it was full weened.

I agree find out exactly what he was eating before, and if he is eating seeds I would give him seeds! Normally i only give my bird a small spoon of seeds after he eats his homemade food and pellets but in your case I would feed whatever it will eat...

Please get him wooden toys and foraging devices. Cockatoos are very destructive and NEED to chew daily. It's not a luxury, it's mandatory. A bored cockatoo will become aggressive and pluck it's feathers.

He also needs different perches- natural, rop, concrete. Those dowels you have there cause foot cramping and joint problems.

As for diet, pellets, nuts and veggies with some fruit. You can also cook rice and other grains and make a mash with chopped veggies. Birds love that.

It's 3 years old already.
According to the former owner, i have tried to use seeds, nuts and apple. But he seems not fit the new environment.

Thanks for your advice, I just bought the toys and they're on the way.
Good idea to mix the rice and grain, I'll try it.

He seems only like seeds and nuts. Eat a little. Doesn't like fruit and veg.

I agree that you need to find out what he was eating at his last home.

That; and his cage looks VERY empty. I hope you are buying more perches and toys for him, otherwise he'll go stir crazy.

Also; I noticed in the photos that you also have an African Grey. I would suggest you keep the new bird separate from your other birds; quarantine him for a time before introducing him to your other birds until you can be sure he wont spread anything to your other birds
Wild animals are called 'wild' for a reason. Keep them that way. Adopt your pets, or buy them from a certified breeder.

Hi Nevermore,
I've already used the former diet menu.
Yesterday I just bought some wooden toys for him. This morning, he ate some food, which made me happy a lot.
