Ok Lemon my cute little cockatiel. Likes to eat dried poop anywhere. :? In her cage, on her gym, and even on the carpet. Can someone help me stop her eating it in at least in her cage?

It is believed that poop eating is caused by nutritional deficiencies. I would vary her diet as much as I can.

My little Charlene :pied: did that and got jeardia (spelled phoeneticly). I took her to the vet many times for the illness. By the time she recovered she had lost many feathers that never grew back.

Keep the cage super clean to prevent a habit.

I also have a poop-eating cockatiel---and like Liz's Charlene he was diagnosed with giardia as well. The poop doesn't cause the parasite (which is what giardia is) but it makes reinfection and therefore treatment tough. I second therefore the nutritional issues as well as a possible cause, there could be something wrong thats causing her to not be able to absorb all the nutrients from what she's eating.

So my first recommendation would be take Lemon in for some tests.

However:
-Some birds just pick off dried poop without actually eating it (so don't worry too much)
-Poop-eating in birds can be because of boredom and bad habits so make sure her cage is clean and that she has plenty of toys you rotate in and out of the cage every few days as well as plenty of instructional and loving attention. We often forget our tiny little tiels are related to the infamously challenging cockatoos---these guys are still as vocal and as intelligent and social as 'toos---just a heck of a lot smaller and quieter. Still, they like to be challenged especially I find with puzzle type toys.

I agree I think she might just like the texture of the dried poop. Try some balsa wood toys or pine, something soft. If you cant get the toys easily you can use Popsicle sticks from a craft store...or wooden clothes pegs just break off the metal spring part....and if it is a deficiency you can get powdered vitamins and sprinkle it on her food.....

Good luck
