Unused Leftover Hamster Goodies

Postby MeanDonnaJean » Sat Aug 13, 2011 12:45 pm

Hey all, new here, but been lurkin' for a couple o' months. Glad I found this place...its very informative with some great readin'. Think I'll stick around for a few ;-)

Anyway, after doin' a halfway decent cleanin' today of my livin' quarters I've gotta question.

I found some unused leftover hamster goodies that we bought a couple o' years ago for my son's now deceased hamster and need to know if they might be okay for my cockatiel and budgies. These are the items I found:

1 wooden log roll (looks exactly like the type used by birds for nests);

1 package of Hamsteroids Cosmic Chew Sticks; ingredients: ground sea shell, ground limestone, food coloring: FDC Blue No. 1, FDC Red No. 3, FDC Yellow No. 5, fema/gras fruit flavoring, tapioca starch binder.

I just noticed on the other item (Kaytee Garden Blend Treat) that it CAN be used by birds, as stated on its package.

Since I stop in most every day, I'll definitely be back in a bit to check for responses. Thanx!

I think the chew toys would be okay. If the ingredience on the treats are the same, offer them but check them first to make sure they are not too old. Mold is dangerouse.

My daughter's guini pig had a rope toy it wasn't playing with. I gave it to Myrtle. She untied it and has been playing with it.

I don't waste anything. Leftovers get added to the Boxers' food. Scraps and seed from the bottom of the cages get thrown out to the birds and chickens.

My VFW post #9899 had a fund raiser breakfast. Someone asked the Commander what to do with the leftovers. He told them' "give them to Liz something in her house will eat them".

I thank ya very kindly, Ms. Liz, for such a quick response. BTW, I love the endin' about the fundraiser breakfast 'n its leftovers destined to go back home with ya. Reminded me of that old Life cereal tv commercial where the kid said "let Mikey try it....he eats EVERYTHING!!" or somethin' to that affect :-)

Sidech - even the wooden log roll?

And speakin' of that log roll.....shouldn't somethin' be done with it prior to placin' it in the bird's cage, such as clean/disinfect/etc? If so, what would the correct procedure be to do so?

Footnote - I do realize they are a couple years old but everything...except the log roll....is still in its original sealed package. Does that make a diff?
